1948 Packard Dealer Promo Collection

Dad was a Packard dealer and I was five years old in 1948. I had a few of these dealer promos to play with, and as an adult I decided years ago to try to collect all the colors. Trouble is, I've never known how many colors were made. Over the years, I have acquired the following colors: tan, blue, cream yellow, light green, maroon, green, gray, chrome-plated, and black.

The promos were made by a Chicago company called Master Caster, now defunct. As far as I know, there is no means of determining what colors were available. I would appreciate hearing from anyone who knows more about this than I do.

Thanks,

Steve in Indiana

p.s. I tried without success to post a photo.

Thanks to all hwo responded. I took your advice and got a manual that represents both the '55 and '56 Packards. I continue to be very glad for this site.

Is the shop manual for the 1956 models the same as the one for 1955? I'd like to buy one for my 1956 400, but all I see for sale is 1955.

Thanks,

Steve in Indiana

I'm trying to buy one of these hood ornaments, as I don't see very many of them. Does anyone know what series they were offered for? I know I've seen them on 23rd Series cars, but were there others? Also, what would a reasonable price be for one in decent condition?

Thanks,

Steve in Indiana

My 1949 Deluxe Eight Series 23 sedan has a 288 engine and a 1954 cylinder head marked 327 on top. I guess I have a factory hot rod, too. Gotta say, I haven't noticed a tendency to break the rear tires loose on acceleration.

Re: Radiator removal, water pump replace?

Steve Henderson
Coincidentally, I am doing this job right now on my 1949 Series 23 Deluxe Eight sedan. I bouoght the water pump from Kanter. I took the radiator to the radiator shop for a cleaning and checkup, and bought all new hoses. I'm doing all this because the water pump was noisy and the fan blades showed some "wiggle" when checked.

I agree with all HH56 says, and would add that the grille center must be removed to get the water distribution tube out for inspection. It was clean and clear this time, but in previous similar jobs I have found the back of that tube packed full of rust and dirt, so I considered it worthwhile to go ahead.

I'm taking advantage of the disassembled status to clean, paint, and detail engine parts I can't normally reach.

Good luck with your project.

Is the front engine mount on these cars painted black, or the same color as the engine? Also wondering about the lower radiator pipe.

Any help appreciated.
