I'd wager the gear was on its last legs and just happened to pick you to die on.
If you give up on the 356, I can make it disappear for you.

I think that I have a 327 starter. I'll have to look. It should fit a 359. Go with the 359. Word on the street is, you'll be glad you did.
Whatcha gonna do with the broken 356?

Wat should root through the carb shelv and see what's there. Could be a 531 on it, if I recall correctly.

If your car has the little engine (282), Kanter should still have a New Old Stock carb on their shelves. It doesn't come with the switching mechanism for the starter - that bit is extra, and they have it, too. Total tab was between $500-600, as I recall - carb, switch, and shipping.
The big carb is likely a different story.

Busy loading stuff to go back to Fred's. Should get that wrapped up today and then hit the road in the morning.
There has been a stack of rims that I brought back maybe a year ago (or not quite, in fairness) to get a buddy to get a buddy to blast and powdercoat them. Only coating they've received is a touch more Ferrous Oxide. So I'm looking at reloading them and taking them back and finding a guy out there and trying again. I like red wheels on a black car. Black cars all need - somethin'. So looking forward to this.

What you have sounds like what I did with my '46 Clipper Deluxe in June. I bought a new hotter 6v coil with the standard posts on top. I removed the existing through-the-firewall coil by removing the three screws. I removed the bottom of it to get the wire connecting to the ignition switch disconnected. The screw was rock solid not going to come out, so I cut the wire to remove it. I got some crimp connectors and connected a piece of 10ga wire to it, being certain that the connections were crimped tightly. Wat has a pretty powerful grip, so not much to fear about that. Now, I had a wire through the firewall (using the existing coil hole) and I'm ready for the new coil.
The new coil came with no mounting bracket. I tried a couple of the box auto parts stores to no avail - it's not in their computers. One guy told me that you can't get them online even. I think it took me about 8 seconds to find the one that Jeff Bezos was selling, so it arrived two days later and for about $7. I used a couple of self-tapping screws to mount the new coil close enough to the old coil hole so that the wire to the distributor would still reach. This I connected to the positive post on the coil since it's a positive ground system. The new extended wire from the ignition switch got connected to the negative post on the coil. I installed the coil wire to the distributor, turned the key and she fired up immediately. If I weren't so lazy, I'd go out and take a picture. Good luck!!!

Haven't checked in for a couple of weeks, so here goes. Fred the cat seems to be making a full recovery, and she seems to be angling to resume her status as a solitary hunter/killer/Car-keeper outside. The birds quake at thought of her return.
Got transferred back to Kentucky on Friday. I had hoped this was coming, but I wasn't sure that it was really going to be in the works, and I was getting serious about looking for another job to get the Hell away from the assignment that I was marooned on in Virginia. It really sucked, and it will continue to suck long after I'm gone. But I'll get to work near the Anvil Collection, Fred's charges, on weekends at least. I also have a house renovation project there, and we're going to install a long-term RV camping corner because the local state park will not allow campers for over 14 days, and there seems to be a market for longer term rentals. Who knew? If all goes as planned, I should be out of VA on Friday morning and will dine with Fred that night. Went out to start Fred the '46 Deluxe - the one that stays here - yesterday. The goal was to drive it to have breakfast with Mom. It decided to have a fuel leak near the carb. The original steel line from the pump had been cut and a fuel filter of dubious vintage/quality has been neoprened into the line. I stopped at NAPA on the way home and scored a longish section of new neoprene, took the old mess out, and re-plumbed the gasoline. I didn't cut the line and installed it with a loop in it, kinda like the thinking behind a p-trap. The idea is, perhaps this will help keep fuel from running back down the line and making the car hard to start after it's been sitting. It can't hurt, I reckon, and it certainly has its leak cured and being able to suck less/no air should help keep the fuel close to the carb, too. More will be disclosed as observations continue. Anyway, Fred the car drove fine on its small outing after the leak was repaired, but it does have a dragging noise coming from the driver's side front brake, methinks. No road trips until that gets inspected. Like Rosanne Rosannadanna, it's always something.
