Re: 1951 Packard 200 at auction -- August 4, 2018/Washington, IN

My estimate of the eventual sale price was a bit low. Per the auctioneer, the car sold for $5000. Not bad for a green sedan.

I wonder how much, if any, the price would have changed if the car had been equipped with an Ultramatic.

I've had some interest but nothing serious so far. The car is now on Craigslist in Cleveland as I want to move this car before the snow flies! Don't be shy...make me an offer I can't refuse.

Although it looks to be in decent shape, it's drab exterior color and a depressingly dull interior (what was Packard thinking?) will likely kill most interest. Add in the fact that it's a low-trim four door sedan and I bet you it sells for less than $4K unless there's a reserve attached.

The ad says it's a 1951 400 but it's obviously a 200 Touring Sedan. It does have the 3spd/OD combo that many seem to covet.

Here's the description from the auctioneer:
"Power Steering, Power Brakes, 3 sp & over drive. car cover in trunk, Run & Drives great! Newport Hill Climb Champion. , Color: GREEN , ODO Reads: 43,396 , VIN: 249215919"

I just watched the end of this auction. Someone scored a deal at $8000. I've attached a picture of the car for posterity.

Stopped at an estate sale in Chardon, Ohio this afternoon and found a 1956 Executive Touring Sedan sitting in a barn with a bunch of other forlorn "collectible autos." It's rough, a four door sedan and is sitting on four flat tires but it is the rather rare Executive. The company running the estate sale has it listed as a non-running 1954 Packard . They told me they're taking offers and the owner will decide in a "week or so."

For what it's worth, the guy in charge of showing the car didn't act like much interest had been shown in the Packard. Throw them a low offer and I bet you'd get lucky.
The sale closes tomorrow at 3pm. You can find the listing here.

If I left anything out, please let me know. I have a few more pictures available and am happy to photograph anything you might want to see.

Given that it's an example of just a handful of post-war CCCA Classics, I'd love to see it go to a Packard guy (or gal) that can restore her or put her to use in the restoration of another of these Custom Supers.

As I mentioned above, the wheel covers are MIA as are the rocker moldings and one door piece. The roof antenna is there but needs the mast replaced. Everything else (including the front bumper and bumper guards) come with the car.

The good news with the motor is that when I drained the radiator and crankcase there was no mixing of fluids so I'm guessing that the block isn't cracked. I did attempt to soak the cylinders over the winter but nothing would budge. Cylinders # 7 and #8 seem to be holding the penetrating oil so I would guess that's likely where the hang-up is.

I did pull some EM clutch pieces in order to facilitate head removal. All of those parts were labeled and come with the car. Anything else that you see missing was removed as I poked around the engine when I first brought it home. All of those piece have also been bagged and labeled and come with the car. (Radiator isn't pictured, but I have that, too.)

The interior was covered in heavy blue vinyl for years. It didn't save the original material but preserved it enough to allow it to serve as useful patterns for replacement.
