Re: Dash lights 1948 Super 8

Hi, regarding dash lights. I found that some of mine were not working any more. There are eight light bulbs for the instrument cluster. Plus two, one for the High beam indicator, and one for the directional lights. They are GE Mazda # 55. There are also replacement socket wiring available if the problem is there. If it is just the gauges, then Howard's description of the glow in the dark paint is the answer. You can get the paint, I did last year. I did not attempt to paint the numerals, but I did the gauge needles. The glowing needles alone made the numerals 10 times brighter.

I did some research last night and found out some things. The engine number indicates it was for a 49 or 50 Packard. The title states it is a 1949. The Chassis number 3282-5-17241 indicates it is a 23rd series 1950. Using Robert Neal's book on the 1948 to 1950 Packard's. The car falls within the range of renumbered 1949 23rd series Super Eight cars that had not sold by October 2nd of 1949 when the 1950 23rd series came out.( renumbered car range from 2382-5-16196 to 2382-5-17983) for Super Eight cars. So now I know the engine is correct. The tittle should have been changed not just the Chassis identification plate by Packard. But it is truly a 1949 23rd series Super Eight.

Thank you everyone. I was able to sand off the paint today on both plates on the block. The one by the distributor was blank. The one above the starter I was able to pull the numbers off of. They were H407593. So this block must be one of the ones Howard described.

Thanks again.

Hi folks; I am still working on a 1950 Super eight engine number today. Although I cannot give you complete information today . I am looking for some guidance from those who might know. I found two block plates for engine info, on the drivers side. I could see maybe some info in one of these plates. It is on the drivers side way back above the starter. The second plate is just to the left of the distributor and because of paint I can see no markings . I checked your site for info and found that the markings I could see makes the engine a 1951-1954. however there are no bolt holes for the 1951-1954 to accommodate the two motor mounts for that area. I am a bit perplexed. I need more information for parts and etc..

Hey, thank you that's great!. The car I am working on is a 1950 Super eight. The control end is maybe? crushed or flattened inside a brass auger type shaft that is operated by rotating the knob on the control. There is a tiny hole and you can just barely see it. On the other hand, Maybe the hand bending I did on the kinks will be good enough. The internal wire only moves about an inch and three eights. I have hand tested in the house with some decent bends in the cables and they do move much smoother.

Thank again

Bowden Cables

While still working on dash components, I found all the Bowden cables working poorly. I tried oiling them, but after a while realized that the inner wire is kinked badly in several spots all all the cables; (Know Doubt someone pushing them out of the way to try to patch the existing wiring). I've got them moving much smoother, but the truth is I'd rather replace them. Is there a source for these cables. I thought about making my own but the end that goes into the control would be problematic. Amy ideas?

Thank you all for your opinions, they are much appreciated. I have decided to fuse the pump, put in an oil pressure safety switch, and an adjustable pressure regulator with gauge, and leave well enough alone, since it was working just fine the way it is.

Thanks again

OK Howard, putting the Super Bowl rum and coke aside. I re read your e-mail, and you did cover my last question in your e-mail. On how it could pull fuel through. My question now is should i put a fuel pressure meter/gauge before the carb?. As currently I don't know what pressure the electric fuel pump is putting into the carb.

Dave O

PS I now know the outcome of the Super Bowl.

Howard, Thanks!. I knew you'd help me out first!. So now putting a side the shrimp dip and hot sticks, I don't want to know the outcome of the game as you are a hour ahead of me. I can see what your talking about. My question now is, can the mechanical pump pull through the electrical pump? or is some re- piping needed?.

While half way watching the super bowl, and chasing down wiring in the schematic I down loaded from our site. I am pondering why? is there an electric fuel pump on my 1950 Super deluxe I purchased last year?. Is there some huge advantage over a manual type of fuel pump?. Why do a lot of people do this?. As I am checking and rewiring this car,I find no fuse to the fuel pump. To me this is very bad. I'm just looking for opinion's, and your thoughts. Because I am perplexed and am looking for opinions.
