If you are still looking, you might want to check with Tucson Packard. Not cheap but ready to install. I think I paid $800

Re: ‘39 Coupe realistic restoration

I guess I am an idiot but this coupe looks solid. If the parts are all there and you want a learning experience....take some time and put it together.
I agree with Flackmaster that paying someone else to do any significant work will not be worthwhile. That being said, there are few Packards left that warrant spending the money for a professional restoration.
I found a basket case Caribbean in 2010 that fell within my project starting price of $15000. At that time Hagerty valued a fully restored car in the $150,000- $200,000 range. A decade later and cars being offered seldom pull $100,000 and many are far less.
If you hope to make money on selling most Packards you will be disappointed. The market is drying up as those who aspired to own a Packard in their youth are looking to retire or are headed to Boothill. There has not been a “ real” Packard since 1956.
None of this detracts from the fact that these were great cars . Finding parts is not easy or cheap and there is far less information or knowledgeable help than you might like ....but this Forum is nothing if not friendly.
I am doing a 39 .six convertible coupe that is costing far too much for chrome , top, interior and other required parts than I hope to recoup on sale...but God willing , I will enjoy driving it on a sunny day.
If you don’t feel up to a serious challenge., sell it and work on something newer. You can get every part for a 1955-57 Chevy on line.
That may be my next project. LOL

Just an update. I called Hagen’s Auto Parts and was advised that they do not have a clutch/ pressure plate for the 39 Sox.
John advises that they have had little luck in getting clutch / parts lately.
I guess it is reasonable to expect that finding parts for anything 80 years old will eventually become a problem. Try finding a replacement handle for a 10 year old trash compactor. LOL

I went through the convertible top replacement for the Caribbean several years ago. I posted my “ solution” but cannot find the link in my history.
I originally purchased a top from Klass collections at the suggestion of the late president of the packard Museum in Dayton where I bought the project car.
Suffice it to say that was a mistake..the top had a sewn in cloth lining which would never have worked. The top was not cut properly and the installer ruined it while trying to make it fit.and Klass had ceased making tops.
I was able to secure 10 yards of the pinpoint white vinyl through Superior tops( they only deal with professional installers):which had the tan interior color vs the Black which was all I could find elsewhere.
A company in .California makes a water based dye which they color matched to the lighter green of the interior. I have the name in an archive folder and it should be in my post.
I sprayed the inside of the fabric and shipped it to Superior who produced the top .
There are a few shots of the color coordinated top on a subsequent post where I screwed up and broke the top frame of my car( the fitting at the top of the cylinder was positioned to the inside rather than facing forward...contacted the wheel well).
The too looks fine but it is not the original Orlon which , if the late Bill Hirsch is to be believed , is fortunate since it tended to schrink and needed replaced within a short time.
Hope this helps.
I believe the material can be secured with the tan interior and sprayed as I did. I have stumbled into several suplliers since who offer dyes that seem durable enough for the inside of a top. There are still upholsterers who can produce a top and pads but the seams would probably leak....but who drives a Caribbean in the rain?
I am not sure .Superior would afford the same service or even if they are still in business.

Again...Thanks to all for the info. I checked on clutch rebuilders but it appears that Kanters is a better deal. My concern was sending my parts in as cores before being able to compare with the replacements and having my units shipped off for rebuilding and then shipping pars back and forth.
Kanters resolved that question by saying my cores would be logged and held long enough to assure them new parts work.
Will get the engine finalized and then ship the clutch parts out.
I have used the Petronix units in many of my cars with good results but I am glad to here the same results have been experienced with the 6 volt positive ground.
In a related question, does anyone offer a high output coiil which will work with the Delco distributor and Petronix? I have always replaced and updated the coil on other cars.
Need to get dash and running boards stripped for wood graining and Rhino lining of boards.
Weather is getting to be an issue in addition to the Pandemic restrictions.

I understand that is the usual arrangement but I was told by Kanter that because people were not returning the cores, Kanter was forced to change its policy for the clutch parts for the 1939 Six.
They need the cores before they will ship the replacement parts.
I do not criticize this action since it will assure that Kanter will continue to offer these parts.
I would prefer to find a clutch and pressure plate that someone purchased and did not use or a possible vendor who is not into rebuilding.

If there is nothing out there immediately available, I will order the pieces from Kanter and immediately ship the cores.

After a long delay predating the pandemic but certainly aggravated by it, I have dragged myself back to the garage.
My engine rebuilld is nearly completed and I have the carb and started rebiuilt and am working on cleaning and painting the accessories.
I know the engine color is green. Is that color used for the bell housing and transmission?

I will be rewiring that car and have been checking on the alternator replacement in a stock case. The preliminary info suggests that it will be an easy replacement for the .Autolite unit. The specs say it will put out 60 amps. The vendor asked about pulley size and I hope someone has that info.
There were some earlier posts about compatibility with the stock amp gauge and if anyone has done the conversion please let me know if the original gauge will work.
There was also some earlier comments about whether the Petronix conversion in the 6 volt positive ground was problematic. I have had good luck with the units on other cars but do not wish to make problems .
Because of the difficulty with bell housing and clutch removal even when the engine trans is out of the car, I am thinking of replacing the pressure plate, clutch and throw out while the unit is out. Kanter has replacement but only with an exchange. Is anyone aware of a supplier who has the units in stock without exchange? I am not crazy about spending money for the parts but it seems good insurance.....I just do not like shipping anything now and hoping it arrives . I am still getting .Christmas .cards, two day Priority mail is often taking over a week...and not much better with UPS and FedEX.
Thanks in advance for any help

I am not sure what inspires people to grab a spot right next to your collector car when there is an empty lot. Makes less sense when they opt to park so close to your driver's door that you have to access the car from the passenger side.
Not all such people have benign intentions. A friend tells a story that back in the days when shopping centers were usually empty on .Sundays due to a blue Laws, he and a friend pulled into a head in slot in front of a package store to pick up a six pack.
The owner of the new Corvette was sitting in the car when his friend went into the store. While he was waiting, a guy pulled in close to the passenger door and swung the door open hard enough to jolt the owner awake. The guy closed the VW door and then slammed it harder into the side of the .Vette .
The owner exited the car and went around the back of the car and could see two gouges in the paint and fiberglass. There was not another car on that side of the vehicle for at least 100 yards.
The owner was angry but just asked why the guy had to park there ..land why he needed to do the door slam twice.
The VW driver responded by snorting " Why don't you take your plastic car and go home?"
Neither the VW driver nor the owner noticed that the Vette owner's friend had exited the package store just when the VW driver made his comment.
The passenger was a huge guy...and a car lover.
The next few seconds were a blur. The passenger grabbed the .VW owner by the head and lifted him through the partially opened window. The driver's door glass broke but that was followed with a series of punches that left the VW driver unconscious or at least not talking....and dripping blood down the door from his nose and mouth.
The passenger picked up the beer and got into the car. His only comment was that he better not open any of the beer that he had dropped since it might get on the interior.
The owner was not sure whether they should call the police or an ambulance but opted to just leave....quicckly.
He always laughed that he probably would not have hit the guy despite the damage done to his car....but he never lost any sleep over it.

Car lovers do not like people messing with nice cars. You can never predict the reaction.

To add to Ross' comment, the hood Rod was added to the 55 Caribbean because the added weight of the lead used to add the hood scoops was too much for the springs and the hood became a guillotine.
The earliest cars...including mine ...did not have the rod. I am pretty sure that the Howard Hughes- Jean Peters car lacked the rod. Leeedy can confirm, I'm sure.
I added one on mine for safety and bought one for a friend who was doing a 400 from Merritt.
Originality is nice but safety takes priority

Re: Simple solution for tunes in the Packard

I tried the Bose unit with Bluetooth from my IPhone and I Pad....the IPod did not have Bluetooth. I did not like having to stash the IPad and Bose unit in the trunk when I left the car and did not like draining my phone battery with no way to chafe with positive ground.
The Bose unit stopped working and I was unwilling to spring for that much money again for a unit that did not survive much longer than the warranty.
The converter is cheap and small and makes sense regardless of whether you want to connect a radio or even a cigarette lighter to connect a GPS or charge your phone.
Much easier than converting to negative ground or running a seperstr battery. The unit works for 6 or 12 volt and there is a unit that will convert to negative ground and boost from 6 to 12 volt...not sure of the method.

I am not sure if the amp unit will work with another phone...assume it would work with older iPhone which had headphone jack.

I did not inquire about a unit that would work with Bluetooth but the owner was helpful and should be able to answer that question.
I opted for the amp not only because of the price but because I do not listen to the radio on my new car...I have several thousand songs I like on the iPod. My AM radio works but we have one decent AM station and the reception is not good....and the sound quality sucks.

I opted for the glove box location and mini speakers for convenience but see no reason that the converter and amp could not be mounted in a trunk or under the seat if you have a hot wire and good ground...the units are tiny..
I will consider better speakers in the 39 since there is lots of open room above the kick panels. I still have to retire the car and there are lots of other things to do before considering music.
I was unaware of some of the suggested options but will look the up when I get to the 39.
This was just cheap and easy.
Stay safe and enjoy the social distancing afforded by cruising while the weather holds.
