No, I haven't checked the damper too closely but I'm sure there isn't a reference pointer to go off of... Do you think there is a major difference between static and dynamic timing, allowing for distributor play etc???

How to time a 1930 Std 8?

Anybody out there in Packard land have an easier way to time a Standard Eight than pulling the starter out and static timing it with the flywheel mark and a light bulb? I was thinking I might be able to crank start it with the starter out and time it with a gun. I think I have a pretty good handle on the rest of the process. Thanks in advance...

BigKev,

I have two eight foot florescent light fixtures kicking around and you are welcome to them. They are in good shape and I may even have some bulbs. They are the plain jane type, bare bulbs without covers. I like "lots" of light in my garage but I had to pull them down when I converted from a swing up to a roll up garage door. Send me a PM if you want them.

Randy, it sounds like your 56 will run like a top! I also think they are a little high on prices but the people who do the best work don't need to haggle. I assume they will line bore the mains because they fit oversize bearings and they want everything to be perfectly aligned. Do you really need to do that? Impossible to tell without a lot of specialized measurement tools and time... In the end (and IMHO), it's probably better just to do it their way, that way you know you you will have one squared away engine. I look forward to reading your "crank it over" report.

Thanks for the post, I think this circuit is probably similar to one of the regional projects from Pacific Northwest region of Packards International:

http://www.packardsintnw.com/regional_projects.htm

IGNITION ENERGY BOOSTER - This solid-state unit is controlled by the points. However, current requirements are less than 20 milliamps, so points will last forever. For ALL cars ? 6 or 12 volt, STATE WHETHER POSITIVE OR NEGATIVE GROUND, 6 OR 12 VOLT. $95.00

I would be interested to hear if anyone has experience with this system, it sounds like a good idea.

Thanks Guys, it is a gorgeous car; my wife and I feel very fortunate to have it. We bought it from Stu White in Washington and as you can see, he took immaculate care of it. As for the history, I don't really know who owned the car before the 1980's but I will post something in the registry when I get a photo that I really like. It's running well now but it looks like I will need to keep my eye on one of the single point conversions. I have also read about solid state adapters that greatly reduce the amount of current running through the points prolonging their life. I may look at one of those if I stay with the dual points set up.

Hey all, I am a new Packard owner, just bought a 726 Standard Eight and am trying to get an handle on parts. I have looked all over the net for a set of points for the original North East dual point distributor. I know there is a single point conversion available but I would kind of like to keep it original. Any Ideas? Thanks in advance...
