Re: An open letter to all who might work on a 1956 Packard with pushbutton shifting

So I understand that the best repair technique is not the cut any wires, I agree, Peter Toet My PB 56 Patrician can get it's knickers in a twist if the voltage is low or persons have wired up the relays incorrectly. It almost killed me as i laid over the guard and started the car remotely under the bonnet, in High on choke when I first got it. I fortunately had a dead man's grip on the coil wire to the distributor and it only got halfway across the road before it disconnected. Be very careful of the PB if you are going to work on it. Talk to Mr PB, best regards peter Toet.

G'day all, Welcome to 2008 and it is sooo good to be still above the ground and driving a Packard. I have just fitted a remote Power Booster (PV44) to my 38 Six, to lower the pedal pressure for my 110 lb wife, and it is a great improvement. The max input pressure is 450PSI and the max output pressure is 820 PSI. It mounts easily beside the original master cylinder (would be easier for LHD) and I shall post a few pics on it. The vacuum draw is from the carby to avoid any cylinder leaning. The boosters are around $A250 overhauled and the piping is pretty cheap ( around $A7 for two double flanges on your pipe with your fittings) I have not noticed that a proportioning valve is necessary at this time, but they are readily available at the local auto spares shop. I have still to fit the Ford discs to the 120 but hope to this year. Best regards Peter Toet

I understand that the 726 normally has a cut-out only, as on my 533. I would consider a regulator to be a big upgrade. The original 726/733 generator is also flat-out at around 15 amps so try to pick up a generator from the 30's if you are going to run reasonable lights, indicators, etc. Best regards, eter Toet

Hang in there Tom, at least he has a young liver and kidneys to process the Chemo chemicals. I am in the Pest Control industry and people ask if I am worried about all of the chemicals (pesticides, rodenticides, etc) that I use every day. They are surprised when I advise them that my chemical exposure is less risky than the average homeowner being exposed to the chemical cocktails under the kitchen tub( sinks), in the form of oven cleaners, stain removers, bleaches, etc. I also explain to anti-chemical people who like to drive new cars, just how carcenogenic the vinyl release agents in cars are and how the first three years are particularly bad. That film on the inside of the windows is breathed in during your airconditioned drive and is not good for you. The same may be said about exhaust gases from unleaded petrol cars, until the Catalitic converter gets up to temperature. Our Packards may be old but they are not poisoning us like new cars. Good luck with the Nephew. Peter Toet

G'day Mal, Very glad to read details of you progress with the 41 -120. For the removal of the tie rod ends I have found the wedge fork type available at your local parts supplier (supa-cheap, Autopro, etc) to be most effective. You have a 50% chance of tearing the old boot but it is a breeze to use and very effective. They cost about $A15 and they are available in a large or small size. I purchased both sizes as the come very much in handy to separate the steering arm and any other taper lock fittings on vehicles. I shall show Noel when he gets here. I am surprised that no one has a non fitted 41 instrument cluster to eyeball where the attachment points are. Best regards Peter Toet

G'day Eric, What's that white stuff on the cars and on the ground? I remember in Physics that there were supposed to be three phases of water. Is that the second phase? We don't get much of that at all Down Under. Good luck with the project and I love the Packord truck. Best Regards for 2008. Peter Toet

G'day Mal, That 327 with 4 BBL will shoe horn into that 41 - 120 of yours, and with that R9 O/D will pull 45 mph in O/D first. It would make those Subaru's think twice about the inside lane overtake in Sydney traffic. Just a thought!!!!. P.S. I have some real fun with "hot" BMW's in Canberra and they get a real shock with the bored out 327 and R6 O'D in the 38-120. Peter Toet

G'day Mal, If your front shocks are similar to a 39 120 lever action then I may have some for you at the price of postage. Have a great Xmas, Peter Toet
