Torbopacman/Eric Boyle says that the (original) windshield washer system will have either a foot pump or a motor (pump). Both of those are absolutely wrong. Now there's a problem with his information in that he has a disclaimer as to the correctness of his posts in that he may be being funny/sarcastic.

If he does not affitmatively state that his post is serious, he says it gives him an "out" on being correct. In other words he says his information is worthless. I wholehaeartedly agree.

The 22nd/23rd series windshield washer system has a round glass bottle mounted on the fiewall, a screw-on top about 5" in diameter with two connections on the top. Look on ebay under windshield wiper for typical units. One connection is for output water which goes to the nozzles, the other is a vacuum line which comes from an acutuating chrome buttoned switch at the lower left of the dash. Inside the jar is a mechanism that is actuated by the vacuum.

I am not sarcastic or making jokes and am fully responsible if my information is wrong. I will apologize and correct it as is appropriate. I respect this forum, its readers and its purpose of sharing information. There are plenty of forums for sarcasm, ridicule and other such activities, this is not one of them.

What you asked for is an opinion, I'll give you my opinion on how to determine the condiiton of an engine.

Set timing adn point gap

1. observe oil pressure cold and hot

2. Observe running temperature fully warmed up

3. Record compression in each cylinder and diagnose using oil to seal leaky rings.

4. Put compressed air into each cyl and listen for leaks in intake/exh manifolds

5. Use engine stethescope to diagnose unusual noises.


My opinion on diagnosing an engine by listening to a recording of the noises it makes is like a doctor diagnosing a cough over the phone without taking blood pressure, pulse and using a stethescope to detect possible bronchitis/pneumonia. It would get his license revoked

Your general question abot is it possible to get an ond engien to act like new. Yes, but to do that many expensive things have to be done. I think the reasopnable question is do you want a virtually brand new engine or an excellent performing engine, good power, no leaks, no visible smoke?

First this is to oil the cylinders before turning over to avoid breaking rings or pistons. Remove all spark plugs, pour in abuot 1oz of Marvel Mystery Oil or a mixture of Transmission Fluid and brake fluid. Let the car sit a day or two. Try bto turn motor over by pullong on fan, may have to put some tension on belt with yoiu other hand. If you cannot free it up, remove cylinder head and check fo rust. If free,change oil, filter, then try to rotate engien with starter. DO NOT ATTMEPT TO START REMOVE CIL WIRE. otate engine wih starter one or two revolutions, listnen for "bad noises" If OK, rotate 10-20 times. Replace coil wire, remove air cleanner pour in samll amt of gas (2 oz) REPLACE AIR CLEANER THIS IS MOST IMPROTANT AS A FLASHBACK FIRE CAN RESULT ADN THE A/Clnr WILL CONTAIN IT. DO NOT ATTEMPT TO START WHEN INSIDE A BUILDING. MHNAVE FIRE EXTINGUISHER HANDY.

Replace plugs, try to start. If it doesn;t even fire, file points with a point file only, never sandpaper etc. check for spark. if it starts and doesn;t run long, check fule system.

get it running to get th oil out of the cylinders, diagnose condition, leaks, compression etc etc

When you say I put forth theories on nylon gears and I show you I have done no such thing, I expect more than an "OK" from you. There needs to be accountability on forums or they are almost worthless.

I agree with you, I wouldn't put nylon in my cars especailly old stock as I thing the old stock has become brittle. We have thrown out 1000's of old stock nylon sprockets.

On roller sets for Packards. Roller sets are useful on several types of engines, short stroke /hi revving, heavy duty,and exotic cam with high valve spring pressure.
Packards with their long stroke like the 356 will not be high revving thus do not need. Packards are not in HD use such as trucks.

Normal timing chains were known a "Silent Chain" vs the noisy roller chains in the early years. Luxury cars stress silence, thus the eventual market wide adoption of such.

You can have a set made at any good gear shop, the gear hob for the roller profile is standard. We have no demand for such an item and no interest in making.

I did not put forth any theories about nylon gear/aluminum sprocket equipped motors, what I did say was that I have taken apart motors with 100,000 miles with both nylon and iron sprockets , and found many to be in good condition. I stated facts that were personally observed. Yes, as you have experienced, nylon gears do fail.

My point was that while cars from the 20's/30's with 2" wide chains often needed replacement early, better metallurgy yields 100,000+ durability in modern engines with narrow chains and even nylon teeth yield high mileage.

The engine failure I have experienced with nylon tooth cam gears is from catastrophic disintegration of the nylon, not from wear. All were Ford products.

I see you took some time to examine what has been said by you and others and you have obviously learned a lot. There have been several who said the chian/sprockets were no good because the chain did not seat at the bottom of the sprocket. As you found out, IT'S NOT SUPPOSED TO.

Yes,as you found, the O is on the face of the crank sprocket on the originals and ours ( AND SO INDICATED ON THE ORIGINAL PACKARD BLUEPRINT WE USED TO MAKE IT). It is the same on Buicks, Lincolns, Caddy, etc etc despite teh fact that others say it's not. We have a rather complete set of NOS sprockets to prove it, others must have a poor memory.

I see some members have told you how to determine if a chain is worn out (stretched) with it on a bench. If it were only so easy. Without sophisticated equipment the only way to tell is to install it with NEW SPROCKETS and see if it is loose/floppy (the infamous thumb test).

Early car chains were up to 2 inches wide and wore out soon, as Packards got newer the chains got narrower because the metallurgy and oils improved. Modern V8's (80's) I've taken apert with 100,000 miles still have good chains and some have sprockets with nylon teeth

You've noted a difference in construction of the orig and our replacement, again a "lighter" construction chain is used adn is superior to the original due to improved metallurgy. Think cotton cord tires from the 30's vs. steel belted radials, which will last longer, which is safer??

Much of the information given on this subject, to be polite, has been ill advised sowing doubts and fears into some readers. We are the only source, I believe, of these replacement sets and have been selling them for 20+ years We have sold well over 1000 sets and with our lifetiem warrantee have had no claims.

The man hours spent on writing and reading these 8 pages could restore the entire drive train of a '53 300, the '53 400 with 4 more main bearings would take and extra 5 minutes (equivalent to 2 more paragraphs)

Eric, you say that 90% of the machined Asian cast auto parts you have come across have been poorly machined. I would like to know what parts thye are and the sources.

I will send for your inspection 10 different cast and machined Asian parts, many for Packard. I ask that you inspect them and report in this forum what you find. Please include your engineering criteria.

An item which we supply incorrectly or which is made incorrectly is returnable for exchnge indefinately, no time limit. Refunds, no questions asked, 30 days as long as in unused condition. If there is a mismatch between the chain and sprocket, return \for exchange. As I said in other posts, we stand behind what we sell.

Although I respect your thoughts, I cannot agree with your ability to perform metallurgical testing with your eyes.

To others:

Made in Japan/Made in Taiwan/Made in China used to = JUNK

There was and still is junk made in the USA You all may make uninformed fun of foreigners or foreign products, but that's what in part killed the US auto industry. The big three thought that imports were junk and would fail and go home , recentlly they had 51% of the USc market.

MOOG has the best reputation fro suspension parts. I heard from a very reliable source that 100% of MOOG ball joints have Chinese made ball studs.

HI,

Fred Kanter here, just starting to be in the 21st century and use Packardinfo!! The info on the change in '40 caps is correct. We produce and accurately advertise many hubcaps and it isn't that our 1940 caps "won't fit" the 110, they are advertised for the 120. 40-41 Six cyl cars use a samller diam, less domed cap whjich we don't make.

However we do have some NOS caps for the 110, not sure how many and whether block letter or script. Contact me personally at fred@kanter.com with which type and how many you need, I'll check stock.now

Keep in mind that the original caps and our repros are made identically, steel undershell with chromed brass skin for finer detail and cannot rust. They look, feel and weigh the same.

Original equipment caps in the 30's were made this way for durability (non-rust). Bill Hirsch's caps are one layer steel with chrome plating, and despite his claims years ago they are NOT the same as original. I've seen many of those caps with pitting and rust. I have to laugh at his claims that thye are easy to take dents out of, ever see a 30's Packard cap that has a curb scar? Unrepairable no matter what it's made from.

NOw as to his years ago claims that they are made in the original factory, he had them made in Spain and now in Taiwan!! NOw as to "Once these are sold out no more will be made" Really, he made them in the 80's in Spain and is still selling the same lot?? But how about having them made now in Taiwan??


Part of my coming into the 21st century is that now there is a place to tell the truth about what really goes on.

Re; the fate of independents.

There have been about 2500 American auto brands since the beginning of the industry. Ford was the earlist powerhouse and Henry snapped up Lincoln to be his halo car. Then they brought out Mercury in '39 and Edsel in '58, today they are both history and Ford is left with 2 brands.

GM bought Buick, Cadillac,Chevrolet, Oldsmobile adn founded Pontiac. Several minor brands came and went, but today only Buick, Cadillac,and Chevrolet survive.

Chrysler brought out Plymouth, Desoto, purchased Dodge?? and AMC. Now what's left is Jeep, Chrysler and Dodge.

So out of 2500 makes there are 6 left. With 1/3 of 1% survival rate I'd conclude that the survival of independents
is pretty slim, and yes mistakes were made. but out of the 2488 other makes why are none left, could it be the fact that they lacked the support of a major auto company,in other words they were "independents"??

Could they all have been in the wrong place at the wrong time and made the wrong decisions??
