Heater core fittings

Just can't stay away

Hello all,

I just pulled all the hoses for the heater core, to replace it all with nice fresh stuff.

I noticed that the angled fitting that comes out of the head, as well as the straight fitting coming out of the top of the water pump, are both pretty corroded.

Can these be purchased new? Or maybe a decent looking hardware store alternative?

Thanks guys,

-Chris

Part of me would like install one to make it look original, but it's probably not worth replacing (assuming they're even available anymore).

I'll just leave the FP the way it is for the time being.

Thanks again guys!

I was going through some of the parts that came with the car yesterday, and I actually found two of 'em.

I'm hesitant to run one though, because I'm assuming there is a spring and a rubber diaphragm inside. Who knows what the condition of those parts are after all these years.

I'd hate for the diaphragm to come apart and send small rubber pieces into my freshly rebuilt carburetor.

What do you guys think?

Radiator Cap

Just can't stay away

Chris R
Hello all,

I'm going through the cooling system on my 53 300 (327 4bbl), and I'm trying to replace the radiator cap.

The factory service manual states that the 2631 chassis series came with a 12 lb cap.

I noticed that the Super Clipper (327 2bbl), and the regular Clipper (288 2bbl) both came with a 6 lb cap.

It looks as though all the 327 4bbl cars got the 12 lb cap.

I noticed on Max Merritt's site, that one cap is listed for all 53-54 cars.

Obviously, this is a little confusing.

What cap do you guys suggest I run? Or, does it not really matter?

Thank you,

-Chris

Ya beat me to it! Haha!

You replied while I was still typing up my last reply.

But yeah, you're definitely correct.

I was curious as to why y'all kept referring to the Carter-2084-S, so I looked in my Packard carburetor list (came from here), and sure enough, it lists both carbs for that year.

After realizing this, I did a search on here and found this thread.

Here is a quote from BH in that thread: Quote:

FYI, there are several topics listed WRT to the 985S used on 26th Series in the Fuel & Exhaust section of the 1951-54 installment to this site's Service Index. Some of those involve superseded parts as well as adjustments and modifications.

Yet, the site's Model Info pages shows either 985S or 2084S used on 26th Series cars with 4-bbl. carb.

The 48-54 parts book shows that the 985S was superseded by the 2084S. Not sure exactly when/why this change occurred, but after a quick scan of the details, I found different P/Ns for one air horn screw (likely the medium length one noted in overhaul instructions) and the low speed jets.

Pretty interesting stuff. Hopefully this clears up some info for someone in the future.

Okay, did some digging through the factory Packard service manual.

According to the manual, the 2631 chassis came with a Carter WCFB-985-S carburetor.

It goes on to list both the Primary (Front), and Secondary (Rear) venturi sizes as 1 1/16"

If you look at the original picture I posted, you can see the 1 1/16" symbols on both the front and rear.

I've attached a picture of the manual for reference.

Regarding the sleeves - My neighbor (old hotrodder) knew what they were. He said they're usually referred to as venturi restrictors, venturi sleeves, or venturi chokes.

He went on to say that they shim down the secondary throats, giving sharper vacuum signal and hence better throttle response.

I know the carb was rebuilt at least a few times (receipts in glovebox) over the years. I'm assuming one of the rebuilders added these at one point.

Anyway, I think I'll leave 'em in for now and see what happens.

Thank you all for the help.

-Chris

Yes! Those guys! Weird huh? I have a another 327 from a parts car with a complete WCFB, and it doesn't have them.

I can't seem to find anything online pertaining to them. It's driving me nuts!
