Re: 49 Deluxe Ignition bypass backup

Thank you Howard! I think you're right about the issue there, there's a bad wire somewhere in those connections but at this point if I start pulling them apart I'm likely looking at a bigger project than I can handle this week. I highly suspect the wires going into the carb starter switch, the switch itself is clean and works well, but those wires are less than ideal. Either way the starter cranks well and car restarts often enough, but after a couple back to back hot restarts (like when you accidentally pull up to the wrong pump, then get anxious and stall ;) the spark isn't strong enough without the jump wire.

I'll plan to pickup a toggle from advance, I saw they have ones up to 30amps, and it sounds like those will be more than enough!

49 Deluxe Ignition bypass backup

Hello Everyone,

I have an issue in my stock ignition/starter switch wiring causing hot-restart difficulties. It's not terribly severe, and I need to get the car inspected and mobile as soon as possible. So for right now, rather than hunting it down and replacing which risks a bigger overall rewiring project, I want to install a backup wire with a toggle switch from the hot battery (stock 6v negative terminal) straight to the corresponding coil input. I have appropriate 10g wire, but do I need a specific spec switch and a fuse for this? It will be needed just to start momentarily, once running the backup wire is not needed to keep going so I'd basically flip it on, start the car, flip it right off again.

Thanks,

A little far for the Boston area! But in St. Augustine FL there's a 1940 6Cyl engine/tranny:

Let's hope this isn't because they put a 350 in the car they pictured!

Ok, I think I was looking to confirm that the tumbler can be removed and I erred by hand, and there wasn't some reason why the procedures needed to be used for alignment of the shaft or anything. Most threads are about more complicated situations (door permanently locked, broken latches, etc). I didn't want to try pushing the lock out by hand and end up creating a problem.

49 22nd Deluxe Sedan Locks

Hello,

I have a question about the door locks on my Deluxe. Both are broken, keys turn but when I pulled off the drivers door card to fix the window I found the square rod sitting on the bottom of the door. I read through the manual and the threads it didn't specifically see what I was wondering, and I don't want to brake anything because the appearance of locks is better than nothing!

My question is, using the needle technique or similar, can I (or a locksmith)remove just the broken tumbler and then slot in a working one (without removing the whole latch assembly)? If that is the case, has anyone identified specifically a tool or needle that fits/works?

Attached is the picture of the broken rod.

I love this channel! There's another series on reviving a 49 Frazer and making it a daily driver, complete with year after updates and videos of repairs along the way. I really enjoyed that because it's essentially what I'm trying to do, though I don't think I'll ever attempt a snow drifting shot in my car.

I also recommend a guy on Youtube who goes by TheCorvetteBen, whose done a series on a 56 Caddy DeVille and a 53 Olds 88. Ben doesn't have nearly the metalwork or machinery that these coldwar guys do and uses more bargain purchased parts, if you're watching with kids or sensitive audiences Ben doesn't have the cursing/drinking references, but he's also not as funny imo and he's in Texas so there's a bit of a disconnect weatherwise if you're from the North where there are seasons to contend with. Both channels do a great job of focusing on fixing the cars for as little money as possible, reusing as many parts as possible, without rodding, restoring, or hacking.

Looking forward to watching part 4 of the Packard v Buick challenge today!

Re: Ongoing Hot Restart Issue

Update on this, I'm cleaning all things electric and she's restarting better than ever now. I drove around the neighborhood a bit last night, and was able to start and stop 3 times with no issue. During an unintentional restart (stalling, still getting used to manual steering and column shifting) at a gas station, it wouldn't fire. I think this was because the charge was low from the previous restarts, but that being said, previous comments must be onto something too because hotwiring straight to the coil got her going again!

All this electrical has me thinking I might actually be able to handle a new wiring harness some day.

I'll take a look at the wires and maybe see if I can adjust the positioning on the hub for the blade arms. If there's no other adjustment, maybe someone tried running them under snow or something and they shifted on their mount. I suppose I could also bend things or try trimming the wiper blade metal housing as a last resort.

Wipers Working! but catching pillar

Got my wipers wiping well now that I put on a set of Trico classic 11 blades. The only issue is that they seem to catch the rubber windscreen weatherstripping on the A pillar and catch, which both prevents them from continuing and slowly scuffs up the rubber which I'm sure will chip away at it over time. Any adjustment I can make to stop this?

Tried to post a video of the wiping but doesn't seem to be allowed or it's too big.

Thank you!
