Nice work Ken, and great documentation!

As for the crack in the water jacket, it looks identical to the one in my 1950 Eight. I don't believe it will be a major problem, just seeing the seeping coolant just looks bad.

I've read a few blogs about patching these type cracks up with JB weld so I'm giving that some consideration. I'm interested to hear your ideas and thoughts.

Looking forward to reading more of your project updates.

Sam

Well, I have to apologize for starting this whole hole thing because with only a quick second look, I would have noticed that it's a plugged drilled hole (by design), with no corroded openings into the heater box. >>Sorry for the False Alarm<<

Also the "sluggish" carburetor performance was found to be mostly the float setting. The rebuild kit spec sheet called for 1/4" but other resources called for 5/32", which did improve the performance but it's still not 100%. Speaking of the rebuild kit, it came with a Daytona type float valve that has a flat tip vs. the normal pointed needle. Does anyone have any experience (good or bad) with this type needle and seat? ... And yet, another opportunity. Further trouble shooting found the vacuum advance not working because of a "frozen" distributor shaft around the mounting bracket couldn't pivot. The diaphragm was leaking to boot. Hopefully this vacuum fix will help me get the carb problems adjusted out.

Thanks Ozstatman for the information. I'll look into the manifolds and consider the stainless inserts.

Howard
- the hole is about 1/2" diameter x about 1/8~3/16" thick (from memory). The bottom is smooth contoured - top half is rough edges (looks broken)

Carbuartor Rebuild

- Just completed a carb rebuild on my '50 Deluxe Eight (Carter WDO 644sa carb), and noticed a hole between the two intakes of the manifold just below the carb. (see pic) Wondering if this is hole is by designed, or became an "automatic modification option" with age.

Also, the first start-up & test drive after the rebuild, the carb seemed to be starved for gas when accelerating beyond idle - however, it did seem to improve with more "blow-out" passes up and down the test route. Float height was adjusted to proper spec and of course idle valves were adjusted. Is there any suggested adjustments or opinions - or should I keep up the test runs with hopes of more improvements.

Thanks in advance for the advice & comments!

Project began on June 13, 2011 (bought in Atlanta Mar 26, 2011)

======================================
Basic plan: 100% original - 2 year - $8,000 budget - only upholstery and chrome done outside

The "canvas" is fairly clean;
. running, drive-able condition
. <1% surface rust
. few and small body dents
. 99.99% complete (only missing fender skirts and rear sway bar)

======================================

June 2011 - rebuilt 244S Carter carb, replaced thermo and radiator hose, General Duel-90's, polish cleaning.

July plan - joy-ride / sunday afternoon crusing

- then, full restoration begins!
updates and more pictures to follow...
