What, Wat worry?

Found some ethanol-free gasoline today - nowhere near home and quite by accident.

Look who visited my jobsite:

Looking at a T5. Actually, the TKX. The GM version bolts up to a Muncie bellhousing, and I think the T10 was also available in that spread. I swapped a T10 for a Muncie in an Oldsmobile once. There's no adapter for the Mushrat T5 to go to a Packard bellhousing. Maybe an old S-10 tranny. I junked one once when its donor truck got wrecked. Meh.

Of course, the trick is centering the input shaft on the crank.

I'm trying to avoid one of those, "here, hold my beer" things.

It is Packard as they built their own transmissions thru 54 and from about 40 on all are essentially the same inside. The exception is that those used with the 356 engine had a larger diameter input shaft and if an OD was attached, a stronger planetary unit in the OD. Externally they are also similar over the years with the mounting bolt hole locations, the levers for the arms, and the tail shaft or the bolted on OD unit being the main difference.

The basic transmission case is the same but the overall length will vary with tailshaft or OD so there is not a fixed number.

You can check out the training manualhttps://packardinfo.com/xoops/html/downloads/TransmissionAndOverdriveTrainingManual.pdf for details on the unit.

Thank you for this. After a bit of head-scratching and pondering and rereading this thread, I think that you have given me what I'm looking for. Logistics at he moment make pulling an in-kind transmission undoable, but I do have one behind the 356 I brought here with me. I can likely get close enough data from it to be able ot move along here.

Wat,

This is anecdotal info at best, don't have any first hand knowledge, supposedly it's the same bolt pattern as a T-10!

That's what my eyeballs told me, too.

At which point, the question becomes, what it the centering of the input shaft relative to the bolts and the crank? Because, if that's the same, my Nefarious Scheme will have grown legs.

e/t/a: I guess that what I really need to do is to pull the drivetrain out of that '41 parts cars and take it apart and give it a going over to measure things.

In my spare time . . . .

Transmission question

My new-to-me driver is a 1946 Deluxe sedan. It has the stock three-speed without overdrive. I've been trying to search up some information but don't seem to be getting very far with it, so I'll ask this here.

1: What transmission is this?

2: I presume Packard didn't make it. Is it a Borg Warner? If so, which one?

3: How long is it, roughly?

4: Does its bolt pattern correspond with anything that came later. For example, if it's a BG Whatever, does it have the same bolt pattern as, say, a T-10?

Thank you very much in advance.

Thanks. Not that I intend to drive at night if I can help it, but every lumen counts.

I'll have to read that more closely to see if they do sealed beams. I reckon that's what's on the '46.

I thought that we had already made fun of the two 1941 Clippers. Geography and decent judgment will save me from those two, although I could still use a set of good long front fenders. Oh well . . . .

LED bulbs

I'm a fan. I use them on my motorcycles with the idea of making the bikes brighter so as to communicate with the st000pids on the road more effectively. So far so good. Of course, those are both modern 12v systems.

Since it's just me these days, as I was driving the Deluxe home from its second outing, I pulled through a shopping center to check the back lights in a storefront window while I watched through the mirror. Sure enough, the left tail/brake (1154) has a bad brake filament. (The tail light works, so I assume the socket and ground are sound.) I ordered a couple of replacements from the Bezos bunch, but I got to wondering about LED bulbs since there's just that tiny light back there in all that sea of 76 year old steel.

Anybody tried them? Found a source? Opinions? They certainly don't overtax the electricals, that's for sure.
