Wow! You guys are incredible, thanks a ton for all the info, I am still going to check it out Thursday but I definitely think a trade is out the window. I will bring a magnet.
I noticed a tiny bit of paint runs in the door jamb and that definitly made me think it was re sprayed, very small detail but sloppy.

On a side note...How are the 53-56 packards not sought after as much. The first time I seen one was last week and I love these things now. The rarity of them for sale also gets me, I have een searching CL for all the close states and there is almost nothing in that year range, especially 400 coupes. All year Carribeans are amazing looking cars.

You can check the codes on the VIN plate to compare the paint color to the factory color, and at least see if they match.

This car could be a good buy if you like it for what it is. Don't plan on doing stuff like fixing upholstery after you buy it because for $20k you can buy one in excellent shape. But if you don't care about moderate imperfections then it could be a good buy.

I am going to check the plate when I go on Thursday or just ask him to take a close up pic. How much would you say it would cost to redo the front seat doors and carpet?

paint good enough to not do over?? Is it original paint that is salvageable? Looks like fogging in paint but, pictures are poor

He said it was original everything, but cant guarantee, I think I can get at least a little color to come out. How can you tell if it is original paint, everything looked continuous in door jambs, fire wall etc...

Then the fabric on the front seat.. you have new paint now. Now you have to deal with SMS

Just looked it up, If I end up getting it I will just roll it the way it is until I am done getting everything tuned in. that SMS is for when I really start to get it dialed in. I plan on slooooowly cleaning, chroming, or replacing one thing at a time while I can still drive it.

One thing I don't see mentioned here is that the blue car has some serious delam in the windshield....

I looked and correct me if I am wrong but a replacement could cost as much as $550?

If you put the same money in the truck that the Packard needs you'd probably be miles ahead of the Packard, sell and buy a much nicer Packard

I was thinking the same thing but I like being the one bringing something back to life. It gives me time to really know it..I cant be the only one right?!LOL.

I'd probably try to get at least 2-4k cash in trade for the truck

Ya I think I am really leaning towards making a offer in cash and selling the truck separately, I dont know though

I am going to go back and check out the Packard again Thursday with my uncle. In your guy's opinion how much do you think this Packard is worth? remember I am in San Diego California. I might just try to buy with cash and keep truck or sell on side later. You guys are awesome thank you for all your help!

Broken parking pawls seem to be a very common problem on that transmission. It's like that on my car too. I don't know why... whether they just break easily, or somehow wear out over time. As you have seen they have very good brakes (aside from being susceptible to brake fade) so as long as the parking brake works properly it will never actually be a problem.

The red one seems pretty good for the money assuming they're in comparable mechanical condition. For most of the car, attaching trim is not hard. Just make sure it has the hubcaps.

Thanks for all the info. The red one does not run and I am waiting on a reply for what is the issue. I like the ultra marine and moonstone stock one but if the redone can get up and running easily that 4k is a big difference. I like to keep things stock colors and trim, I definition like the blue more for that.

Are there any other things you guys recommend I check out next time I see it? Any problem rust areas that could have been covered up? Thanks again!

Good morning, I was going to start at 13k. That's why I was thinking trade was close enough. I am in San Diego.

Do you mind linking the original CL post?

When you say "doesn't stay in park" do you mean the lever itself falls down, or the car rolls in park (parking pawl is broken)?

Hey there the car will roll in park but the shifter will stay in position. How expensive is it to change that pawl out?

Another thing that I forgot to mention is the Brakes are SUPER touchy. It takes very little to lock them up.

I will check the leveling system today or next weekend if he still has it. I alteady know he only wants to trade because he knows he will be able to sell the truck faster than the car. Thanks for all the help everyone! Below is the origional craigslist post...

Should I Make the Trade?

Hello everyone, I am interested in trading my 1957 Chevy truck for a 1955 Packard 400 2door hard top. My truck is not restored but is very mechanically sound and could be a daily driver. My truck is all stock 4 on the floor. The 55 Packard I checked out today runs but the following does not work..turn signals, most all gauges, the tranny doesn't stay in park and who knows what else. This car is so bad ass though. I love the car he is asking 12,500 but will trade for me truck. What do you think? I attached pics of the truck and car. Thanks
