Re: 1941 Packard Originality Questions

First of all, guys, thanks for the information. This is highly educational and much appreciated. The car is a 1904, but when it was restored (back in the 80's they think) the owner restored it as a club sedan (photos attached). While I find the look attractive, and the car appears to be very nice for an older restoration, I'm leery of buying it because it's not an authentic car.

Any and all advice appreciated!

1941 Packard Originality Questions

I'm looking at a 1941 Packard 160. The car is metallic green in color and is billed as being an older restoration. The interior is beautiful, but the dash is painted two-tone green. While it looks nice, I always thought this dash should be woodgrained. Also, the seat upholstery looks like it may be English broadcloth, but I question the authenticity of the design and maybe of the colors used.

Most of my Packards have been postwar, so I'm no expert. Can any of you prewar guys help me out with this? I'm savvy enough to know the car has less value if it is not authentic.

I'm going to try to attach an interior photo.

Thanks,

Steve in Indiana

1955 Oil Pumps
#83

Steve Henderson
I am considering the purchase of a 1955 Packard 400 hardtop. I've been told several things about the 1955 V8 engines and their oiling problems. I'm wondering what is true.

One story is that the '55 engines all had inadequate oil pumps. Don't buy a '55.

Another is that Packard engineers found and fixed the problem sometime during the 1955 model run. Buy a '55 only if it's a late '55.

Another is that Packard engineers found and fixed the problem for the 1956 model run, so if I buy a '55 I should change over to a '56 oil pump. Better to look for a '56.

Another story is that all Packard V8s had inadequate oil pumps and the only fix is to substitute a GM oil pump.

I would surely like to get the straight of this situation before I plunge and buy this '55. Can anybody get me straightened out?

Thanks,

Steve

Thank you for your help. This will make it easier to get the car home in the middle of winter.

Auto Transport Companies

I'm considering the purchase of a Packard and having it shipped about 250 miles to my home. I would like advice about the companies that do this, as I have never hired a shipper and have heard horror stories about damage to cars during loading and unloading.

This is a nice car and as it's winter with roads salted heavily, I'd prefer an enclosed trailer.

Does anyone know of a safe and reliable shipping comppany?

Thanks,

Steve

1946-47 Shop Manual?
#86

Steve Henderson
Did Packard ever publish a shop manual for the 1946-47 Clippers? I have two copies of the 1946-1950 manual (eight sections), but it covers the 22nd and 23rd Series with little or no help given to the 21st Series Clippers.

I have a copy of the 1941-1947 Clipper Master Parts Book, and it seems logical that Packard would have published the companion shop manual at the same time. So far I've had no luck finding it.

Any help would be appreciated.

Wow. I am surely grateful for the detailed help.

I got the horn ring off and made the horn work by connecting the steering column wire to the new harness. The horn sounds beautiful, just as a Packard should.

The turn signals are next, but will take longer, I'm sure. I'm going to wait for another day for that.

Thanks a million for your help.

Hi, Wes:

Twofold answer: The previous owner half-installed a new wiring harness, and neither the horn nor the turn signals work. I really like driving this car, and I know it's dangerous to drive it without those items. Also, the turn signals won't cancel after the turn, so that mechanism has to be dealt with. Believe me, if I could solve all this without removing the wheel, I would.

1947 Horn Ring Removal

I just bought my first 1947 Clipper and need to get the horn ring off. This clearly isn't like my 22nd Series cars, where the center cap twists and lifts out. None of my Packard manuals cover it.

I found two screw holes in the back of the steering wheel, but none of my screwdrivers can get a bite in them. I don't want to get savage and ruin the wheel.

Any help will be appreciated.
