Re: We found and spoke to a prior owner

Good Morning...At least we have information on one prior owner! I'll just stay after David and see if he can find anything. This week I'll speak to the Nebraska Department of Motor Vehicles and see if they have anything. I know it is a very long shot but even a blind pig procures a truffle once in a while. Enjoy your day. We found and spoke to a prior owner

Good afternoon all...Well, I had a bit of time the other day and decided to see if I could find 'Miss Prudence' prior owner. We purchased her from a wholesaler in Minnesota. However, he had never registered her and so he sent along the registration from David A. Raile in Grand Island, Nebraska. It took me about an hour on the internet to find an address and a phone number, no e-mail address. What to do? I decided to just make a phone call and see what would happen. David is 80 years young and remembered 'Miss Prudence' well. We had a great conversation and while he could not come up with the name of the man he purchased from, he thought he had it in his files. He is going to look up the information and call me. If you have the time to work back, one owner at a time, it is definitely worth it. Ernie

The paint that we used was normal automotive paint. We used paint from Space Age in Mesa, Arizona, only to obtain the correct color and in the spray can. We were like the fellow above who does not even make eye contact with his headliner...Ernie

I would like to suggest one additional possibility which would be to spray paint the headliner. Many auto paint stores will mix the color you wish and then put it into a spray can for you. I have seen this done and it does not put any pressure on the headliner and in the two cases, it made the headliner look much better than it did before. Good day everyone...Just a question. If this automobile sat from 1996 to present...I wonder if grease and dirt in the R-9 control area could be the problem. If wiring is checked and the controls are opened up and flushed out and cleaned, it might work quite happily...Ernie

Good afternoon...If at all possible, go and see the car or pay to have it evaluated. Owen may check in soon and perhaps make a recommendation for someone to look at the car if you can't. There can be way too many slips between the cup and the lip. Welcome to the forum and good luck. Ernie

Re: Redline/Maximum Continuous Operating RPM - Packard 6 Cylinder Engines
Home away from home
Home away from home

Ernie Vitucci
Good Morning all...I would side with Owen and run in the 40 to 45 mile an hour range for pre-war cars. With our old girls, the engine is only part of the engineering. Packard engineers most likely did not plan on cars running at 50 plus speeds for any length of time. The roads and front ends were just not designed for it.

I have two old machines, a 1931 Model A and she runs quite happily at 40 in normal third gear. She has a Mitchell overdrive designed for her and in 3rd over, she will run 56 at the same engine rpms. Over that speed the whole car is not happy. There are many written comments that Ford intended 40 or so for continuous driving speed when the cars were built.

Our 1949 Packard 288 with 3 speed, over drive and radial tires will run 60 quite happily in overdrive. In regular 3rd gear, she is happy at 45. I don't think that the Packard engineers intended her to run over 60 for any sustained period of time.

Does anyone know if Packard ever provided information regarding sustained cruising speeds for their machines?

Enjoy your day and your Packard.

Ernie

I have been down this road with our 1949 Deluxe, 'Miss Prudence' and have been successful. If you with to discuss all that I have had to do, give me a call at 602-679-4252. The first thing that I would look at in your position is the condition of your distributor. Are the bearings worn out? Are the advance springs worn out? Does the vacuum advance work properly? Also, your timing might work better at 12 degrees before top dead center, rather than 6 degrees.
