Re: Engine sludge?

Mal,

That was exactly where it was! I'll look tomorrow to verify the breather tube is there. I think it probably is.

Your picture threw me for a second- it took a second or two to remember that a RHD drive car would have a RH master cylinder! Nice looking motor! Thanks for the tip.

Engine sludge?

I was cleaning off the block to put my oil pan back on, and the passenger side rear wall of the block, just above an oil drain hole, there was a lot of build up. To me it looked like carbon mixed with oil, but it was right next to the rear main bearing.

Anyone else seen anything like that on these motors?

I don't have a picture, because I didn't think to take one until it was all cleaned out.

Thanks!

Was it possible that some component was brazed on in the past 79 years, and the chunks of brass are braze material that came loose?

Re: Ken's 1937 115C Touring Sedan

Since my last post I've gotten a little work done. I put the starter back together with a solenoid closer to stock, new plug wires, and a little paint sprayed.

I learned something interesting about the starters in these cars. In '37, the 120 had an Autolite starter, and the 115 had a Delco-Remy unit. The solenoid on the Autolite had a copper bus bar attaching to the body but the Delco-Remy unit bolts straight through.

The plug wires weren't a custom fit set; I eyeballed the lengths in the parts book because it was the only way I could get the right plug ends. I ended up shortening five wires, but I think it turned out ok.

Also looked at the old wires when they came out, and they said "Packard 440" on the wire. They were black rubber- any idea what era they're from?

I also pulled the oil pan off this week. Cleaned out the expected sludge, but I had one surprise. The oil plug threads appear to be installed with JB Weld. I'll leave it for now, but it might be a welding job sometime in the future. The oil pan gasket arrives via UPS on Friday, and hopefully this old car will fire up on Saturday.

The pictures:

- Sludge in the oil pan
- Oil pan plug
- Repainted starter
- Two shots of the hood. I seem to be missing some hood hardware. I don't think it should be able to be removed without unbolting anything, right???
- The updated look in the engine bay. A little bit of progress.
- Old wires with "Packard 440" on them

Re: To gasket or RTV...

I never heard back from Ultramatic Dynamic, and the phone number on his website didn't work! So, I called Merrill Machine instead, and I'll have gaskets for the oil pan, fuel pump, and tappet covers (side covers?) next Friday. Thanks again to everyone for all the advice- it's much nicer to learn lessons the easy way (told) than the hard way (screwed up!).

To gasket or RTV...

I pulled the oil pan to clean out the sludge and clear the screen on the oil pump intake, because I suspect it hasn't happened since Carter was in office. I had the slimmest of hopes that I could salvage the gasket, and like most old cork gaskets, it crumbled upon disassembly.

I haven't ordered the oil pan gasket yet (waiting to hear back from Ultramatic Dynamics, they have the best price), and I was wondering what the general consensus is: do most people get the gasket on something like this, or just use RTV? I can see advantages either way. Thoughts?

Lee- I also own a '37 (115c), and I've found that my local Napa carries most of the tune-up parts, and even has them in stock! Part numbers are in the Packard Parts X-Ref tab, or your local NAPA might have it in their classic book- mine did.

Good luck!

@JW- thanks for the picture! How does the solenoid terminal on the starter side attach to the body? Is there a nut on the inside of the starter can? The starter currently has a copper square head bolt coming through the starter can.
