Thanks for your help. I’m thinking it may be the clutch pedal not being completely disengaged. 🤞
I put some soundproofing down plus carpet which may be restricting movement. I’ll cut out the offending material and try it. I won’t be able to test it properly yet as I am in the UK and they put salt on the roads till spring. Thanks again.

When my 1934 Packard has been driven say 10 miles and is hot I have trouble engaging first or reverse gear. It crunches. I can manage by turning off engine, engaging gear and then restarting engine. If I engage 2nd gear at rest and then quickly put it in 1st or reverse it doesn’t crunch. I read somewhere using thicker gearbox oil might help. It maybe helps a bit but it’s still difficult to engage those gears. Any ideas on what is happening and what to do about fixing it?
Thanks and Happy New Year.

Thanks for that. being from Yorkshire in the UK I'm all for saving money! However on this occasion I'll take the advice of Flackmaster and go for the improved gear ratio at the same time. I understand it's very important the parts are fitted properly. Should I be looking to replace bearings/seals at the same time and if so, are they available?

Thanks for all your help. I've been in touch with EDL Services who have been very helpful. They now just need to know if the car engine is either super 8, 384ci or standard 8, 320ci. Engine serial number is 378118. Would this be standard 8?
I can't wait to get this sorted: Days are getting longer now and spring is on the way!

Thanks for all your help and sorry for not replying sooner. I registered the car on the vehicle registry. It’s an eight. I had someone more knowledgeable than I look at the axle and he was sure that the worn gears are causing the noise. When I got the car it soon became apparent there was no oil in the axle. I didn’t drive it far without oil but maybe the previous owner did. I’ll try contacting the suggested engineers tomorrow.
Once again thanks very much.

My 1934 limousine has a very noisy rear axle. I understand it needs a new crown wheel and pinion. I could get them made here in the UK but wondered if they are available in the US? Also I’ve read somewhere it may be a good time to alter the drive ratio so the engine revs less. The engine would certainly take it as it will accelerate from walking speed up a hill in top gear. I think it would benefit as travelling over 50 mph sounds let’s say exciting!

1934 dynamo

My 1934 Packard doesn’t charge the battery. The regulator was not working and I’ve had that rebuilt. It still doesn’t charge! The chap that rebuilt the regulator was unable to test the dynamo. He suggested I join the 2 wires coming out of the dynamo together and then connect them to a headlight bulb. Earth the headlight bulb. Revving the engine should light the bulb. Does this make sense? I’ve tried it and it didn’t power the bulb. Any help appreciated.

Thanks for that. So the cogs or chain that drive the dynamo go in the same direction as the fan belt? Yes, happy to share all information I can get from them. Also I’ll register them as suggested.

I am the proud owner of 2 x 1934 Packards here in the UK. One (a limousine) has been restored and the other could do with some tidying up but runs well.
I have had the dynamo on the limousine overhauled and the people that have it need to know whether it is driven clockwise or anti clockwise. Can anyone help please.
