Gas gauge removal

I have a 1938 four door sedan convertible that I am having trouble with the gas gauge reading correctly. I have had the tank sending unit reconditioned but the dash gauge still indicates full when the switch is on.

the tests we have done indicate the dash gauge is faulty.

it looks very difficult to get the gauge out. Hopefully we must be missing something.

Can anyone tell us the secret? Thanks

Can anyone tell me anything about this fuel pump that was added to my 1938 120. I am new to Packards but I don't think this was original. Was this a common addition? Can't seem to find anything on the internet to identify it. NAPA couldn't find it.

Thanks for information.

Thanks for the info. Appreciate all.
I have attached photos of the engine and serial #.
The serial number is stamped on a pad on the block behind the horns.

Modified Engine

We recently purchased a 1938 1197 four door convertible sedan.

We have been Model A folks previously and we know that frequently there a enhancements made to make the car more road worthy.

As we try to learn more about our new Packard we are finding that it isn't all 1938 vintage.

The biggest question is about the engine. The serial # for the block is correct. (could be original; could be restamped).

The head is a 288 Thunderbolt. The carburetor is a Carter.
Were these changes done to make it more road worthy? Wondering if these were common upgrades.

Any comments would be educational. Thanks

Car won't start without priming carb

Just purchased our first Packard...a '38. Appears to have a more modern engine (288 Thunderbolt) and carb (Carter 118-68).

Drove fine when it first arrived, now when parked after a short drive (10 miles) it doesn't want to start. If I prime the carb it will start and run again.

Anyone have a suggestion? Thanks,
