I just went through this conversation with my new machine shop guy, a fellow who builds race engines and knows the internals of an engine every which way but loose.

On my 1938 Packard, he worked on rods (straightened them to racing specification, had no idea they were "bent"!) and his recommendation was 40 ft-lbs for the rod bolts. He further recommended no cotter pins, as then you had to adjust position to accommodate, plus a broken cotter pin can wreak havoc in an oil pan.

I only pass this on as information, but I can assure you this fellow knows his stuff.

As a side story, when he was looking at the valves on my '38 Super Eight, he held an intake valve up, and said "Ya know, if I just change this contour on the top of the valve a little, I'll get you five percent more horsepower out of the car....."

My first thought was to tell him to leave alone, but he's not that kind of guy, he's going to do it regardless...

Thanks Steve...are the side panels the same woven texture as what is visible in the front? Want to drive down and see your car, but probably won't be before this one is done...thanks dc

The flocking is an interesting thing, although it would seem that it wouldn't hold up well. Thanks for comments. As I stated on the AACA forums, I find it hard to believe that the metal floor in an upscale 160 would be left bare metal, but anything's possible. The fellow who owns the car I'm working on wants it done as correctly as possible, that's why I'm looking for originality. thanks

Am working on a 1940 160 convertible sedan. Can anyone tell or show me how the trunk was finished? Cardboard on the sides? Rubber mat or carpet on the floor? Want to do what's original and don't know what this is at this point. Would appreciate any help thanks David Coco Winchester Va. david.coco@comcast.net

Thanks! Now I'm more confused, of course...the car I'm working on has no pattern whatsoever, yours has zippers sides and top,, although you state it had snaps at top originally...and the one Steve has that's being discussed now on forums has zippers on side, a bar across top held up with straps....guess I need to ask owner how he wants to proceed...if anyone else has input on back window design for a 1940 160 convertible sedan, would be appreciated..thanks again David Coco Winchester Va.

Perfect, that's exactly what I needed, thanks!! This car had no original upholstery left, I wasn't aware that there were two different upholstery styles that year. I have measurements and pictures from two different original cars, showing the seat areas (which look similar to the picture you posted) and the door panels (the doors with two half rounds/three stitch lines, with half circles around door handles and window cranks.

Does that sound like an early or late interior? What's the "other" interior differences?

thanks again David C.

Could someone tell me how the top well area (behind rear seat) in a 1940 convertible sedan was finished? How were the "humps" for the trunk hinges covered? Do they show through holes in a covered panel, or ??

I went and looked at an original car but forgot to look behind the rear seat, I'm doing upholstery in one with no patterns...
