1951 Axle Compatibility - can i use a 1954?

I have a 1951 200 in Australia, and destroyed my axle a couple of months ago. I have a 1954 centre that I could use - if I swap out the centre and shafts will it work in the original assembly? Or do I need to replace the entire assembly, inc housing, brake plates etc.
Been searching all around but just can't confirm anything.
Thanks
Oska
