Loud noise at the hydro tappets

Dear Packard friends,
I have completely overhauled my 1951 327cui engine (complete overhaul kit from Kanter with new hydro tappets).
I have also cleaned all the oil ducts.

Now I have the problem that the engine runs very quietly when cold and the valves are not audible, but as soon as the engine warms up then 1 valve rattles extremely loudly (the warmer the engine the louder).

I use a multigrade classic engine oil with SAE 20W50.
Is it possible that this oil becomes too thick when the engine is warm and this causes the noise with a hydro tappet?
According to the manual, the engine should be run with HD20 engine oil.

What else could be the cause (I don't think a new hydro tappet has a fault, do you?).

Is it possible to replace a hydro tappet with the engine installed without removing the cylinder head?
What exactly do I have to do?

Thanks for your help.
Georg from Austria

Hello BigKev,
Thank you very much for your tips.
I was on holiday and can only get back to you now.

I still have the following questions:
How big should the gap in the water pump be?
How and where exactly must this be measured?
How can I measure the flow rate at the radiator?

Thanks again for your help.
Kind regards
Georg from Austria

Hello HH56,
you were perfectly correct, it is this pin by the timing valve.
What do you mean by "that helps control a manual low-high shift"?
Is it possible with this gearbox to switch between low and high while driving?
As far as I know this is not possible with the normal Ultramatic and damages the gearbox?

Hi Ross,
thanks for your info too.
What are the advantages of the late valve body, what are the good things?

Thanks for all your help.
George

Please excuse my late reply, you guys helped me a lot with your info.
I assembled the control unit yesterday.
While cleaning the workbench I found a very small dowel pin with a length of 0.320" and a diameter of 0.064".
Can this be from the control unit of the Ultramatic?
If so from where exactly?
Thanks again for your help!

Engine overheating

Dear Packard Friends,
I am from Austria and have been having massive problems with engine overheating when driving uphill on my 1951 250 convertible.
Chronologically it has happened as follows:
In 2021 the freshly overhauled car was thermally perfectly fine, I was driving in the vintage rally "Ennstal Classic" and this went over some high mountain passes and the temperature gauge was always right in the middle of reading normal.
Unfortunately, I had to disassemble the cylinder head due to a breakage of a new valve spring and found that the engine block had a crack on the right stud between the 4th and 5th cylinder.
Since I wanted to do another vintage rally in the fall of 2021, I mounted the cylinder head with a new gasket, but could not tighten the nut on these studs.
To keep the water loss under control, I installed a cooling system sealer.
Unfortunately, I forgot to remove it after 10 hours of operation and left it in the cooling system until spring 2022.
Since 2022, the engine gets warm on small climbs and it always starts to boil when going uphill high mountain passes.
Now this year I rebuilt and installed another engine, installed a new high performance mesh in the radiator, checked all hoses and tested the engine with both water pumps (I have 2 different ones).
It still gets just as hot and even with the new engine the head gasket is already damaged again.
Now I am already very desperate, because I can not find the error!
Maybe you can still give me tips on what else I can check.
Many thanks!

Ultramatic gearbox

Hello,
I am currently restoring the Ultramatic gearbox on my 1951 250 Convertible.
The gearbox had had some not very professional repairs in Venezuela.
Now I am a bit unsure which series the installed Ultramatic gearbox is from and whether the control unit has the correct internal parts.
Are there any exact illustrations or drawings somewhere?
Unfortunately, the illustration in my spare parts catalogue is very poor.
Thanks for your help
George

Thanks for the good tips.
Unfortunately, I made the mistake of removing the guides from my 1951 327 engine without measuring the installation depth.
Can anyone give me the specified installation depth for the intake valve guide and the exhaust valve guide?
Thanks!
George
