Recommendations for help fabricating replacement parts?
#2

I’ve been working for some time on a brake issue (discussed here:packardinfo.com/xoops/html/modules/newbb ... c_id=29091&start=10#forumpost284868). Disassembling both wheels I’ve finally tracked down the root problem: the female end of the universal joint connecting the brake actuator on the side that was disconnected is damaged (see picture below with damaged part on the right).

I took the part to a local guy recommended by some people in my car club but he was unable to help - he couldn’t reproduce the shape and also the piece is of hardened steel, which he cannot do.

I wonder if anybody has any recommendations on someone who might be able to help with this? My biggest fear is sending it to someone who is not motivated to do it, or can’t, and it just sits around on their shelf for months with my car remaining inoperable. So any leads on somebody who’s good, and responsive, would be very appreciated.

Thanks.

Reopening this thread with another question. By way of background, when this part came detached (I’ve learned) the brake plate camshaft fell out (this is the part that would’ve fit in the circled indentation (first picture)), and is now lying in a ditch somewhere.

Having had no luck tracking this down from other sources, I have determined I will need to fabricate a replacement. Easier said than done as the parts were (I believe) mirror images on the left and right, so hopefully the person can handle it. But now I am left with the problem of disassembling the assemblage from the right side so I can get that camshaft for use as a pattern. But in what I think qualifies as irony, I cannot figure out how to disassemble the part that just detached entirely of its own accord on the other side.

So here is my question: does anybody know the process for going about detaching the brake actuator apparatus (second picture)? I cannot see clearly, even if the brake plate is disassembled, how this part detaches. I would prefer not to take more things apart than necessary. Also attaching a photo of the opposite of the brake plate for reference (third picture).

I suspect those are all fine. When i was first researching this question for my 443, I was told “go to the Model A forums and see what they’re suggesting for their 600W gear oil” which led me to this. I’ve had no issues.

macsautoparts.com/differential-oil-600w-quart-bottle-16-16020-1.html

[edit: after posting I realize that oil is no longer sold on that site - whoops. Still I imagine an equivalent is available.]

Thanks for this, ‘32. So it turns out, they do have the right part at Max Merritt. Despite the labeling, the one numbered BDC 102 does not fit a 443. The one BDC 101 however is right. And they were happy to refund the incorrect one - they’re always good about things like that. So there you have it, the update nobody needed and no one asked for. Thanks again for the help everyone. 😁

So after ordering these from MM, and then having them sit in my garage through the days of winter far too cold to work in an unheated garage, I finally started tinkering with these, and they are definitely the wrong size (too big) for a 443. I’m thinking (unless others have suggestions) of removing the one good one I still have attached and looking someone who will custom fabricate a copy. If anybody has suggestions who might do be able to do it it’d be appreciated, otherwise I will probably just look locally.

Re: Dual ignition coils: which coil for which cylinders?

Thanks Owen. I suspect it’s the same on mine - that matches what I had thought but couldn’t find anything verity it. My 443 has dual coils mounted just inside the driver’s side of the firewall, and a Delco distributor.

Dual ignition coils: which coil for which cylinders?

a question that I hope will be easy. I’m having ignition issues in that cylinders 4, 5 and 6 (that is, if the cylinder closest to the radiator is #1 and the one nearest the firewall is #8) are not getting spark. I wonder if this might be traceable to a problem at one of my two coils (or the related wiring or condenser). Does anyone know which coils are related to the firing of which cylinders? Just trying to work my way through potential causes to the current issue (and hoping I don’t test the patience of this forum with my seemingly nonstop parade of issues). Thanks.

Edit: I should add that my car is a 443 runabout.

That’s how mine came, too. Power top but no power windows or brakes. Story is it was the driver of the dealership owner’s wife (Ostendorf in Buffalo). I suppose that says something about whether the people selling the cars thought some of the options they were trying to upsell to their customers were actually worth the money.

32model901, thank you that is exactly what I was looking for! I was hoping somebody made these. Also I’ll definitely take a closer look - agreed it seems like it shouldn't just shake loose. The help is much appreciated.
