Originally, your Packard used timed vacuum for the distributor.

I believe the instructions are meant to be used before you change carburetors.

Let us know how the engine runs with distributor on full vacuum.

You're absolutely right, whoops! I'll do a bit more driving around and let you know how it goes.

Now that I'm running again, planning on taking it to my mechanic to get it properly dialed in.

I believe you may have connected the distributor to the manifold vacuum port. You probably want to be on the ported port. Easy enough to check which is which.

As an aside, I have found that in some instances the engine will run smoother and cooler if the distributor vacuum is connected to the manifold port.

With the distributor vacuum line disconnected and plugged, set the timing and engine idle speed and carb mixture to spec. Connect the vacuum line and reset engine idle speed and carb mixture.

This will give you full vacuum advance at idle which will result in a cooler running engine at idle speed. This may also result in a smoother running engine in the transition off of idle.

Worth a try.

Thanks for the info!

I definitely did connect the vacuum line to the manifold port. On the first go, I connected to the "timed vacuum port", but found that the car was running a little funky.

Per the instructions in the carb manual, I checked if my distributor was timed or full. If full, it's recommendation was to hook up the driver side port, which was the manifold vacuum. I did this and noticed that the ride smoothed out.

If interested, here are the instructions that I followed:

"Determine if the distributor vacuum port is timed (no vacuum
at idle) or full (vacuum present at idle). With the engine at
operating temperature and idling, pull the vacuum advance hose
off of the carburetor and “feel” for vacuum by putting your finger
on the vacuum port (See Fig. 2). If
your distributor has timed vacuum
advance, you will hook the vacuum
hose from the distributor to the
passenger side vacuum port on
the new carburetor. If it has full
vacuum advance, it will be hooked
up to the driver side port."

I felt a strong vacuum at idle, so I went with that set up.

Circling back with an update- got the new carb on the Clipper last weekend. Went great! All in all, about a 4 hour process for me. Here's a list of how I went about it for anyone that's planning on doing the same:

1. Install mounting plate and gaskets.
2. Mount carb.
3. For electric choke, spliced into the ignition wire. So there's one wire coming off the ignition for the coil and the other to the choke.
4. Hooked up fuel line.
5. Capped passenger side vacuum.
6. Capped PCV valve.
7. Plugged manifold hole that was wired to old choke.
8. Hooked up distributor advance to driver side vacuum.
9. Hooked up power brake vacuum to brake port on rear side of carb.

The car fired right up and sounds great. Will just need to adjust the timing and put some miles on it now.

G'day Ehathaway,
to PackardInfo.

I invite you to include your '55 Clipper in the Packard Vehicle Registry.

Thanks Dave! I'll get my Clipper registered! I've had it going on 20 years now, was my first car. Been lurking this website for a longggg time :)

Those Edelbrock carburetors have three vacuum outlets: a small ported, a small full vacuum and a large full vacuum. Probably the small ported is the one for your distributor. The large full vacuum can be used for the power brakes.

Much appreciated

Hi all, the carb on my '55 Clipper is pretty tired, so I'm going to go with the Edelbrock set up. For those that have gone this route, can you advise on the vacuum line set up that you went with? I have a fairly accurate idea on what goes where, but any help would be appreciated. Thanks!
