I know this is an old thread but being new to the site I wanted to see if it could be revived! I just purchased a 1931 packard 826. It is leaking a small amount of antifreeze from the water pump shaft (small puddle). I tried the packing nut but it is very tight, not frozen but tight. I want to try and put new packing in. The question is should I try to remove old packing or just add new?

no problem! I have never owned one but always wanted to. NADA has big difference in prices between 1930 and 1931 basic models, 726 verses 826. Seems like less 1931 produced according to model info on this site. What is a reasonable amount to pay for a 1931.

Really wanting to buy a 1931 packard that is for sale. Love the car but no idea what to pay. Great condition inside and out. Only negative is no side mounts. frame off resto and rebuilt engine. Please advise
