From what I have personally observed, I would agree with Kevin. I have a '56 Executive front fender lying about for the repair of my 400. The inside of the wheelwell is coated in that same black rust proofing stuff, however where the coating is no longer present the body colour is visible. I see no reason for why it should be any different on a Caribbean.

Thanks for the reply, Leeedy. I do not think we are talking about the same part though. The part is not attached to the moving part of the convertible top, it's the part which the rear view mirror and the sun visors are attached to. I think from reading what you've said so far, that the header bow must be what clips onto it when the top is raised.

I'm sorry for the mix-up in parts discussed, it'd be easier if I had a photo to use but I took no photo of the one my friend has shown me.

Nevertheless, your words are very insightful when it comes to the Caribbean's convertible top. This car will be my first convertible thus far, so there's plenty for me to learn.

I still do not know how complete the top itself is, I know the "frame" of it is still there, and I have some of the original top left which has been taken off before I got involved.

I'd be happy to show you some of the photos I have of the car as it looks at the moment. I am also purchasing it from the current owner of 1001, so I have some up-to-date photos of that too. Can do this over email if you wish.

I will definitely take my time with searching for all the different parts for the car, as I accept it won't be a short-term project seeing as most of the car is in bits and pieces.

Thanks for your reply Leeedy. I think my description of the part was poorly worded though, I didn't mean the chromed bow that goes on the convertible top itself. I meant the top part of the windshield frame at the front of the car, the part that the convertible top attaches to.

I believe that part to be cast in Zamac/Kirksite originally. I am hesitant to recast it in a different material too of course, it'd change the weight distribution of the car but not sure to what degree. I think it will be challenging to find that particular part.

5699 parts questions

I am about to acquire a "project in progress" Caribbean Convertible '56. I want to know whether anyone knows about the availability of the following parts as they're from what I know so far, the hardest to find. They are nowhere to be found with the car, and I doubt I can find these here in Sweden.

First off is 469453, the solid bow which the windshield is attached to, parts book refers to it as "upper" under "rim - finishing outside". I expect this one to be quite hard to find, but I have the option of either milling or casting a new one here in Sweden. I assume the part is originally cast in zamac as the other cast trim pieces. I know that casting/milling it in brass or bronze will change the weight of it, but not by how much. Maybe best to use zamac if possible.

Then, the other two parts I've in mind so far are the dual carburetors which are both missing. So that'd be parts no. 6489090 & 6489091. Fully restored ones are not necessary but appreciated too, as long as they exist in a passably restorable form. Doubt I can find these here, and I have no clue what happened to them when the car was imported 25-30 years ago, or whether they even existed on the car then.

If anyone has these or knows where I could find them, I'd appreciate knowing it. There are also more parts to follow, however I do not know which are hard to get as of yet.

I have seen the condition of 1001's body in person, and I am also forced to deal with it in a way. Instead of getting the trunk lid that came with 1210 I'm left with the trunk lids for 1001 and the 400 donor to combine into one that's good condition somehow.

It's relieving to know that the engine parts that have gone missing aren't on 1001's engine without either me or the current owner of 1001 knowing though.

I will have to hope that the previous owner of all three manages to find whatever he has misplaced, especially since it should've been a part of what my friend paid for.. and what I'll be paying for soon enough.

Thank you for your reply, do you know what year this was? 5699-1210 was auctioned off 2021 from what I can tell. I believe the restoration of 5699-1001's frame and engine was done prior to this, but I'm not entirely sure. If it was before then I doubt the parts from 5699-1210 could have been used up for it.

Trouble is that 1210 was first on the islands Gothenburg here in the west, when the owner developed dementia all his cars were just sent outside as lease for the storage building expired or something like that. Then they were sent off for auction with sometimes random parts coming with them, and a lot going missing then already.

For example, along with it followed a 352cui block too which was sold along the way, the dual carburetors for the 374cui matching numbers block are long since missing, and at first it only had the 1x4 intake manifold (now it has a 2x4 as it should, but still no carburetors).

Adding to the headache, everything was taken apart and cleaned up but never had grease reapplied so time hasn't been so kind to it.. Not to mention the bucket of random assorted bolts and nuts.

Then it ended up near Stockholm on the east coast, owned by the guy who Böök was restoring 1001 together with, and now back on the west coast. I guess my best bet is trying to wrangle the parts out of the previous owner on the other side of Sweden, as the parts were there between then and now. Talk about fun as I have less than half an engine in parts, when it had almost doubles for everything just two years ago.

Hello, I have a question regarding the engine for 5699-1001. I am friends with the most recent owner of 5699-1001. He bought it in a package containing it, 5699-1210 and a '56 400 donor car. He wants to sell me 5699-1210 with as many parts as possible.

5699-1210 was disassembled almost entirely during the late 90's by a T. Ullman here in Sweden, however it was auctioned off a few years ago after he ended up getting dementia.

Afterwards it ended up in the possession of the person who owned 5699-1001 and the donor 400.

When it was auctioned off there were plenty of parts for the engine present. The issue is however, that now when having gone through the parts for it that remain today, the majority of them are nowhere to be seen.

Only few pieces remain out of what was originally with it, and the crankshaft which was still there is for an Edsel 410 engine, previous owner seems to have two crankshafts though (no idea whether they are correct).

So, then, my question is, is it possible any of the parts that came with the engine for 5699-1210 were used up in the restoration of the engine for 5699-1001? Or did my friend simply get fooled when he bought the 3 cars as a package?

I can list what remains (that I've found thus far) and also link the auction page which has the pictures if it would be helpful.

Does anyone happen to have a copy of the PDF containing the blueprint for the J-6065 tool? The PDF attached to post #22 has vanished over time.

I am aware that replicas are for sale, but the price adds up with shipping to Sweden. If I had the blueprints I could make my own replica of the tool at my workplace. Besides, it'd be fun to try.

Parts Advice Wanted

Hello, my '56 Four Hundred got into an accident on the road with another driver cutting a corner out in front of me on a 70km/h road. The damages are mainly on the front left side of the car, with dents on the hood, above the firewall on the left side and one minor dent on the front right fender. However the front left fender is entirely crumpled up, as is the chrome trim, as per the image. The grille has cracked in several places and become distorted, with the grille net being torn up. The bumper is very warped too, and the cooler is bent inwards onto the fan, and thus a bit stripped by the fan (engine is fine).

Now I know that the car's fixable as I got real lucky with the damages, both to the car and myself considering there are no seatbelts in it. However, what I want to know is where I'd find most of these parts. I am already looking with my friends in the Nordic Packard Owner's Club for a lot of it, but I figure that I will have to ship in a lot from the U.S.. So I am wondering about the availability of these components, especially something the front left fender and the grille net. If anyone could give some pointers as to where I could find these it'd be real helpful.
