Yes there is an oil screen covering the pump held in by friction and the access plate. You should be able to remove the screen through the access plate, clean, and adjust the pump if necessary.

Always check your Packard Parts catalogue.... has all the answers. On page 222 the Tire pump is listed for all eight cylinder cars Series 1-6. The next parts book for Series 7-9 its on page 130, again all cars equipped. I dont know when they were eliminated.

The pump is attached on the side of the transmission, the long rode on the pump extends upward through the flat front floor board. The protruding rod has a decorative ring around it much like the aluminum trim on the linoleum floor boards. The rode has a slot to accept a large screw driver to engage the gears. Under the front seat the you find the "male" air line nipple to attach an air hose, also supplied by Packard. I rebuilt mine works like a charm.

Straight Eight has many new King Seely items for sale. Great source for the unique and odd specialty parts.

The small Eights in the two small wheelbased cars 626/633 used the side-low mounted water pumps. The two larger cars 640/645 with the bigger "super eights" had the front mounted mounted water pumps.

A handful of good options for instrument repairs. I used Williamsons Instruments for all my guages.

I also buy a beautiful CNC dash housing to replace the old pot metal. Barry Lowe makes alot of specialty parts for the late 20's Packards at his resotration shop.

Be sure to check your service manual for spring load capacity if you are having someone make you a new leaf. I use Dever Spring in Santa Ana CA.

MY 640 manual states:

Front springs All types: Right 1050 lbs
Left 975 lbs
Rear springs range from 1100-1400 lbs. depending on the body type.

Final Note: Techincal Letter # 1862 Dated 1/2/1929 reveals a change in the design of the front spring to enhace ride quality. An entire paragragh, "The new springs can be distiquished by tapered ends.. plus no more auxilary main leaf which extended from the center to the rear over the rear eye... in the new design the rear end of the second leaf curles around the spring eye from underneath."

I have made it my practice to read the Packard techincal letters before I enbark on some aspect of the restoration process.

Good luck!

The PACKARD SERVICE PARS LIST manual needs to become your favorite reading material! The manual for your car is 242 pages long single line type listing every nut, bolt, and washer used on your cars. When Packard manufactured their own special hardware, usauly has a longer part number, many of the Packard restoration supply companies have the item. When that fails I have Bruce Blevins search his 40,000 original Packard drawings and get the items made at a machine shop. The PAC club sells all the manual for most cars.

My 29 640 with the Big Eight has/had the same cork material. I plan replace it as well. Believed to be sound deadening material

Thanks for sharing this amazing photo!Looks like a 1929.?

This phots confirms at least two items of authenticity I have been trying to research before my chrome and pin stripping is completed on my 1929. First, the headlight support bar is not chromed on the ends where it is attached to the fenders. Chrome is only on the center section. My unmolested extra parts car is so far gone but conforms this, though I can barley make out flex of chrome on the center section.

Second, the the hood louvers show the "design/layout" of the pin stripping. Looks like two stripes around the entire edge.

My dealer handbook entitled, "Packard Custom eight Facts 640" (56 fine print pages!) states- "Louvers edged with 3/32" strip."

Always looking for more original informations and photos of 1929 especially 640 models.
