yes sir, i was also thinking about hooking the pressure gauge to the direct drive port... If it never goes high, then it has to be the transmission, but if goes to high pressure, and nothing happens, it must be the clutch..... Am i thinking right???

OK now for progress... I have fixed the motor mount, the water pump gasket, rebuilt the fuel pump, distributor bushings, new vacuum advance... I drove the car for about 50 miles on back roads this weekend, other than 1 noisy lifter the car ran perfectly... But i can say for sure the direct clutch NEVER does anything.. it drives just like the 50 Buick Dynaflow.. albeit, it has a much more efficient torque converter, and more power overall... I am thinking the governor is stuck.. the car sat up since 1974.... i am hoping i can take the governor out and clean it with out much trouble, is there any special tips for the governor removal, cleaning reinstall i need to know about??? Thanks Paul

OK it was a battle with the Packard on Saturday.... I took the radiator out and flushed it, and had a rebuilt water pump to install... This will allow me to drive the car and really test the transmission, I guess the front motor mount has sagged, because i had to really jack up on the front of the engine to get the water pump bolts to clear the front engine cradle. I installed the new pump and it leaks like crazy at the bottom, i can only figure that some of the old motor mount rubber got in between the pump and the block... Anyone seen this issue... Packard 27 Paul 0.... Thanks

I have type F in it right now... the inside of the trans was very clean, and did not have a burned smell... I too love the old transmission tech... I have several old vehicles with unique by today's standards... transmissions... Ihave a 39 chrysler with factory overdrive, a 49 desoto with the M6 hydraulic trans. and i have a 50 buick 2dht with the dynaflow... So i had to have the packard when it came along.... My wife calls it the "Ultra-Dramatic-Drive" because i spent a week talking about it and trying to figure it out when i first got the car....

Thanks Paul

Thank you... I think it has the ability to lockup... Because the very first time i fired up the engine, i had the car on 4 jack stands with the wheels off, i had basically hot wired it directly to the coil to start. I soon realized that the trans was in gear and the rear hubs were turning, i pulled the hand brake to stop them, this stalled the engine... at this time the throttle linkage was off so the throttle valve would have been completely idle position... That was the first time the trans had operated since 1974...

Hello to all, i have my 1950 Super 8 Turing Sedan, with 327 and auto, up and running, i rebuilt the brake system, and took it for a drive this weekend...
Basically all i have done is remove the pan and head from the engine, and the pan from the trans and clean everything up... I have leaking everything... LOL so a new water pump and fuel pump kit is on the way...The trans however is not leaking and seems to be functional in all gears... My big question is regarding the direct drive engagement?? i have only driven it twice down a country road from my house. The DD clutch, if it is locking up is un-noticeable to me... is there a way to know for sure that the clutch is locking up??? Also i dont want to damage the trans further by continuing to drive it if it has a sticking DD valve or in correctly adjust throttle linkage... i have looked at the tech articles on the linkage and just as a starting point, it dosent seem too far off... If i cant feel a DD lockup on my next drive which should be longer as im changing the above mentioned pumps this weekend.. My plan is to hook a pressure gauge to the DD port behind the bell housing and see if its getting pressure... Am i missing anything?? any thoughts appreciated.... Thanks Paul

hello to all, i have the engine running, it has one ticking lifter, im hoping it will settle down with time...
Now to the question at hand.... I have a rebuilt water pump to install, and im thinking of removing and cleaning the water tube...

Does the grill have to be removed for the water tube to clear?? I dont mind taking out the radiator as i will back flush it, but
i dont think im ready to remove the grill???

Thanks Paul
