Thank you, Ernie and BigKev! I didn't see anything for the voltage regulator in the parts x-ref for the voltage regulator, so I'll check out the NAPA website.

1954 Clipper Inoperative Temp and Fuel Gauge

My 1954 Packard Clipper Two-Door Club Sedan (327c.i.) has an inoperative temp and fuel gauge. I made sure all the wiring connections are secure behind the instrument cluster, especially to the gauge voltage regulator behind the binnacle. I suspect it could be the gauge voltage regulator, but not sure. I can get these gauges to register, slightly, when I increase engine RPM, but, mostly they seem dead. I tested the temp gauge by contacting the feed wire from the sender to the engine block, and got full deflection on the gauge, so I know the gauge works. If it's the gauge voltage regulator, does anyone know where to get one? If I can't source the regulator, does anyone know of a work around? Thanks for any thoughts on this topic.
Best Regards

Packard Friends,

Just wanted to take a minute to thank you for all your help and advice. My '54 is back on the road with a new starter now and is running just a strong as ever.

Special thanks to David Flack and Ross Miller for helping me source the right starter. Shout out to Howard also for his helpful tips on installing the starter.

Best Regards,
Warren Stevens

Thanks, Howard

I will check all that out with the rebuilder. Also, I am thinking of checking with the rebuilder on my original starter to see if he can machine some new holes for the four-bolt solenoid so that it can be positioned to allow better access to the top bolt fastener of the starter.

That would entail moving the base plate of the starter as well, so that the steel bullet that goes into the solenoid will be positioned correctly.

I will get back to the forum on all this stuff. A very interesting project indeed. Hey, the car is off the road but it's a great learning experience.

Best Regards,
Warren

Thank you, Howard

I was hoping maybe there was a 6v mini starter that would weigh less and take up less room, but obviously that's not available.

PS...the core I am getting from the Flackmaster is an MCL-6003 that was used on 1949-1951 models and is apparently an Autolite product that is advertised at 8 ft/lb of torque. My current 1954 unit is a Delco unit that produces 13.5 ft/lb of torque. Do you think the Autolite MCL-6003 will be a suitable replacement for my Delco 118027? The MCL-6003 seems to take less amps to operate and spins at a slightly lower RPM.

Appreciate your thoughts.

Best Regards,
Warren

Dear Packard Friends,

The only way I could get to the top bolt fastener of the starter was to remove three base bolts from the top-mounted solenoid..I was then able to wiggle the solenoid out of position enough to get a narrow wrench on the fourth and final attaching bolt of the solenoid. Once I got that loose and removed the solenoid, I now have a basically clear shot to the top fastening bolt of the starter. Wow, that was difficult but satisfying.

I'm gonna take up the Flackmaster's offer on an older style starter core and see if that makes life easier.

PS..does anyone know of a 6v high torque mini starter for sale for the six-volt 54 Clipper. I know it's not original, but I'm more into driving than originality.

Thanks again for all your help and suggestions.

Thanks again for all the suggestions, which I will try.
David...I will probably take you up on that offer. Let me see if I can get out of my own way in removing this starter and I will contact you.

You are all very helpful and considerate.

I will keep you posted on what finally works.

Thank you for the suggestion, but the geometry of my solenoid and starter will not allow a direct shot to the head of the upper bolt fastener. The legs and engine-side bolts of my solenoid are in the way. I can't get the solenoid off without removing the starter. So I appear to be between a rock and a hard place.
