-you will need some light oil like 3 in 1 to lub the gears etc.

3 and 1 oil is a not a good lubricant and way too thick for a clock. 3&1 oil, if still the same as it was in the 60's,is parafin based and drys out and solidifies. Not a good thing for a clock. I remember when I was a kid we had a cylinder record player that needed oiling. I oiled the heack out of it with 3&1 and it did run for a wile. After several weeks the oil turned to this thick wax and the thing stopped working again. Buy some clock oil from a clock maker or repair shop. Also a good thing to keep in mind when oiling a clock is more is not better. Use very small amounts of oil.

Kev let me chime in on this one. I think in the political climate today discussion, in any forum, is vital to our survival as a country, as a free people, and as far as that goes the survival of our Packards as well.

Whether 6.2 or 7.2 volts isn't bad. The real question is the DIRECTION of the voltage. A volt meter does NOT give DIRECTION. By direction i mean is the voltage from generator or battery????

A DC voltmeter does indicate polarity (Dirrection). If the battery terminal voltage doesn't rise when you raise the engine RPM the generator is not genen. Simple as that.

Are you sure there is a problem? If you're measuring 6.2 or 6.3 volts then the charging system may be OK, as that is what the voltage should be when the gennie is charging

The above isn't necessarily true.

If the generator is charging the batteries terminal voltage should creep up to around 7.4 volts. If the battery voltage just sits there at 6.2/6.3 volts that indicates that the battery is fully charged but is not being charged by the generator at all. Note: check voltage rise by increasing the engine RPM to equil say 25/30 MPH. Terninal voltage should slowly rise to around 7.4 volts.

Have looked on and off for years for information and/or pictures of "Dave Pike Packard Co" in San Bruno California. This is the dealership that my packard was first sold from in 1951. Can anyone help with information on this dealership? Thanks, Bob

I've "heard" that Kanter's hydraulic lifters are made in China, and therefore not worthy of being installed in a Packard.

Interesting statement.

Yellow/red ignition wires? What comes next - iridescent distributor cap, chrome coil cover? How about chrome-plated horns and faux chrome conduit wrap for the wiring harness?

Great ideas Owen. I like the chrome wrap for the wires.

Don't worry I will use black for the plug wires.

Here's another source of info and materials that many in the hobby have used.

Thanks Owen, I'll check that out also. I did go to the first suggested site and saw plug wire that was yellow with, I think, a red tracer that looked interesting. I know that the yellow plug wires would be incorrect but they would look great on the engine. My problem, as you probably know, is the fact that I berate anyone who wants to modify anything from absolute stock and here I go thinking about putting on the wrong wires just because I think it would be pretty.

What do you think? How can I justify this to myself?
