1953 starter bendix x-reference?

Hi...

I'm curious if there's a cross reference to track down the bendix unit in the Delco Remy starters for 1953 Caveliers ( 327 / automatic transmission)

Just hoping to save a little time, without having to order and wait a couple weeks. Mine's got a bad spring, so I need to replace it before the flywheel takes a beating.

Hi... I was hoping maybe somebody might know the diameter of the rear wheel cylinders on a 1953 Cavalier. I want to try and find something at a local parts store - without taking the wheel cylinders apart. I was successful with the front cylinders at 1 1/8" But I'm not sure about the back ones. is it 15/16" ? I'm not sure

ah... thanks for the image post. I'll take that out this weekend and see if it helps figure things out.

fuel returning to float bowl - instead of through jets?

We're having a problem with a Carter WCBF carb on a '53 Cavalier. At first impression, it appears we have a bad accelerator pump. It's not pushing gas well through the jets. But my dad called me tonight. He's taken apart the carburetor and narrowed down the problem - but not sure how to solve the problem.

I hope I can explain this. I having not seen inside the carburetor myself - it seems to be his pet project, through the week. So he was trying to explain over the phone.

He took the top off the carburetor, and inspected the accelerator pump and the place where it sits, and saw that the problem doesn't seem to be the pump itself. There's a hole on the side (I don't know if he meant the pump, or the carb??? - This is the part I wasn't understanding) When operating the pump, its going through that hole right back into the float bowl, instead of through the jets. When he plugs off the hole, the pump squirts fuel just as it's supposed to do.

He also mentioned there's a little ball that just seems to be floating there (I'll guess maybe he means the 'intake ball check' ? Not sure) It doesn't seem right that it just floats in its little area - not seated down in anything.

So, now... I hope that made some sense. I've tried to find some diagrams online to help, but no luck.

high idle linkage needed

In the process of rebuilding a Carter wcfb 4-barrel for a 53 Cavalier, we realized the high idle link arm is missing. Any thoughts on where we might come across one without having to hunt down a whole carburetor?

Thanks!

Hi.. we're getting ready to find tires for a 53 cavalier and I'm hoping there is a modern size that will work. If i remember right, the original size was 800-15

Im worried about getting something that might run the wheel well if it's too big.

Ah, ok. another thing to look at.

We have eliminated the exhaust leak idea, so far. So, one good thing.

It sounds an awful lot like a lifter to us in person, but I'll check the valve lashes. It's such a tricky thing, because I know the phone recording is a bit worse than the engine actually sounded. We're so used to 6's and V8's so I'm sure we're off on what things sound like.

Ack! That's no fun. At that point, I'll probably have to just save a couple paychecks so I can rebuild the engine. I was hoping to avoid that for the short term.

I can look closer, but I think the exhaust manifold is fine. The exhaust pipe itself is pretty banged up. I wonder if it's a little shaky at the attachment. Somebody on the other forum suggested possible exhaust leak as well.

I think the plan is to drop the pan, clean the oil pump, and maybe we'll get to the valve chamber and see if anything's sticking. It actually sounds better than my cellphone could record, it's just that damn rattle that doesn't sit right with me at all.

All in all, I was surprised by how quiet the straight 8 is as an engine in general.
