Does anyone know whether the earliest cars had chain drive? I've just been to Lanhydrock House in Cornwall, and there is a comment on an early photo that the house had two cars in 1901 or 1902. One named as a "Chain Driven Packard" (no photo of cars)
I'm away from home & haven't access to my own library, which would probably give me the answer!! If true, it shows that at least one was exported to England. The other possibility is that it was a chain driven Panhard!! Michael Taylor

Hi, all who read this,
We found the problem with the main shaft was a replacement shaft (not factory - not sure whose, perhaps Max Merrits), where a new shaft & gears had been very well made & machined: However, second gear was screwed & spot ended onto the top shaft, with brass bushes. (I have no idea where I got it from) The weld had come undone resulting in second gear unscrewing itself & the car selected two gears simultaneously with rather disastrous results. We have made up the necessary gear to press fir the collar as in the original factory top shaft: the roller bearings & other minor parts came from Max Merritt, so we now hopefully have a New "As From Factory" top shaft. I'd caution against using the other style shaft which can come undone If you use your car at all, rebuild it as the factory did. The other will probably fail! Michael Taylor

Many thanks, Wade. I know Denis did it, as have some of his parts, but wasn't sure of exactly what he did. My guys will sort it, I'm sure, but we wondered if anyone had a source of the small bits that are in the assembly.
will get onto the registry All the best to you two Cheers, Mike

THE MAIN SHAFT OF THE 1939 - ? GEARBOX WAS ALWAYS SUPPLIED WITH THE SECOND GEAR LOCKED ONTO THE SHAFT: IT WAS REGARDED AS A 'NON-SERVICABLE ITEM"
I HAVE A NEED TO REPLACE SECOND GEAR AND RE-BEARING MY MAIN SHAFT, & WONDER IF ANYONE HAS GOT INTO PRODUCING THE LOCKING PIECE AND BEARINGS ON THE SHAFT. MY SECOND GEAR BEARINGS JUST COLLAPSED! - OR THE VARIOUS PIECES WHICH SECURE IT DID! I HAVE ALL THE GEARS I NEED, FORTUNATELY. ANY HELP MUCH APPRECIATED. (I HAVE A '39 SUPOER 8 BOX IN A '38 SUPER 8 VICTORIA COUOPE WITH A FLOOR SHIFT) CHEERS, MICHAEL TAYLOR
