Well, I finally got the transmission project done on the 52 Mayfair with the 374 V8 and it only took two years! My tranny guy was able to get a TH700 so I bought the conversion kit from Bendtsen in Ham Lake, MN. I got the car back about a month ago and I have to say I am very pleased with it. That overdrive gear makes all the difference. I can feel it kick in at about 50 mph and the car keeps up with traffic, and doesn't work very hard doing it.
I have put several hundred miles on it and it works great. Time will tell...

BH,
Thanks for pointing that out to me. I'm still new to this and am just starting to learn how many resources are available on packardinfo.com. I'll print them and get them to my tranny guy. Thanks again.

Main reason, I guess, is that I am aware that there is a conversion kit for the 727. If there are other options that are better, I am willing to consider them. Shop still has the car which still has the Twin Ultramatic. The mechanic is trying to get it to come out of "park" when parked on an incline. Maybe I just need a new transmission guy!

Thanks to all of you that responded. I'm checking out the conversion kits that have been mentioned. You've given me some things to think about, and now I know that I do have some options. I will put the car in the registry. Thanks again for all your help.

Transmission Modifications/replacement

Hi all,
I have been a lurker for awhile but this is my first post. I have a '52 Packard Mayfair that has been modified in a couple of ways, most importantly it has a '56 drivetrain in it (374 from a 400). Actually the whole thing works together fairly well, but the weak link is the Twin Ultramatic. Like a lot of other people, I am getting fed up with not being able to use the car the way I want, mostly because of the transmission. has anyone come up with a really good replacement transmission? I've looked at some of the threads, but it doesn't look like there is a lot of agreement on a solution. What are your thoughts? Thanks in advance.
