OTGDY,
Thanks for the info on cleaning the gas tank. Let me know if you find the name of the chemical that you used.

Has anyone added an additional fuel filter in addition to their ceramic filter, so the car would now have two fuel filters?

My gas gauge is not working so I am guessing that my sending unit has been damaged so I am going to add the after market one that is posted on this website.

I am dropping the tank to day and I will post some pictures later.

Thanks for the input. Is it better to clean your gas tank or replace? Has anyone replaced their tank?

1953 Packard, Carter Carb rebuild input and fuel filter question

Hello friends,
I have pulled my Carter carburetor (Model WCFB) and purchased my carburator kit to rebuild it. Does anyone have any input on doing this? This will be my first time rebuilding a carb in 25 years. Looks like a ton of parts. The problem that I am having is that the car will not start up without spraying starting fluid into the carb first. After it runs and warms up for a while, it will start right back up evertime instantly. When I drive it around it will run very poorly, almost like it is flooding out. It idols great? Just floods out at hi RPM or acceleration. I am guessing rebuilding the carb will fix the problem? If it sits for over a half hour I will need to use the Starting fluid again to get it started. I just purchased the car a few weeks ago and I thought I would rebuild the carb to see if it would start/run better.

Any suggestions or ideas? Has anyone else had this problem?

Also, I just cleaned out the fuel filter ASSY about 10 miles ago. This is the glass type with the Ceramic filter. While removing the carb today I noticed that it has a lot of dirt in the bottom of the glass filter/jar again? Has anyone done the process listed on this extreamly helpfull site yet? It is titled "REPLACING CERAMIC FUEL FILTER WITH PAPER TYPE". I am cosidering doing this but wanted some feedback from someone who has also done this.

Thanks for your valuable time and input, it is greatly appreciated.

Hi everyone,
I just purchased a 53 Packard last week, I have ordered a service manual and am waiting for it to arrive. I have a few questions if anyone can answer them:
1- My door plate calls it a Model: 2672, Mine has the lightning bolt on the front panels with a spot light on the drivers side. Were those just options? Is a model 2672 a:
See picture 100_8430
Cavalier
? 4 Door Sedan

Clipper
? 4 Door Sedan

Clipper Deluxe
? 4 Door Sedan

Patrician
? 4 Door Sedan

2-I have a push switch under my dash that appears to be factory installed (see picture with a arrow pointing to it Picture 100_8496 ). Nothing happens when I push it. Does anyone know what this does?

3- What is the proper way to start the car? When I turn the key on and then press on the gas pedal, the car will turn over. Is that how you are supposed to start it? This does not always work (engage the starter)so it appears the previous owner put in a aftermarket (I think) switch also under the dash that I can use to start it as well. Do all Packards have this switch under the hood?

I will continue to research this awesome website, thanks to everyone for all your help,

Dave in Utah
