Re: forgive me for I have sinned, Chevy engine in Packard

As far as the trailer hitch receiver goes. I will have to go out in the cold garage and jack the car up and get a picture. But basically I made a couple of brackets out of 4" angle iron, that was trimmed so it would bolt onto the outside of the original bumper brackets, It used the same bolts. The lower lip of the angle then was below the original bumper brackets and pointed to the center of the car. I used 1/4" wall 2" square tubing and placed it right next to the Packard frame crossmember. The ends of the tubing rested on the flanges of the previously installed angle iron brackets. The tube was welded to the angle brackets. Then I made up a short receiver out of the same tubing and welded it to the new crossmember. I made up a short ball mount out of 1/4" wall x 1 1/2" square tubing. There isn't a lot of space up there so everything has to be shorter than commercially available parts. I will take a picture but it might take a couple of days. Wayne

Thank you for your kind responses, I feel welcome already. To answer Packard V-8's questions. The engine is a mid 70's 350 with a Quadrajet 4 barrel and HEI ignition. When I did this swap in 1982 there were not many overdrive automatics available, so the turbo 400 was used. It does get a little over 20 mpg. It does have AC, I used the Chevy compressor and brackets, but installed an aftermarket underdash unit in the car. It works very well. I also installed a 1956 Chevy electric windshield wiper motor. This was a bolt in, it even uses the Packard cable to control it. The only thing I had to do was space it out from the firewall to clear the lip. I also built a hidden trailer hitch receiver up behind the bumper. I tow my Model T Ford speedster behind the Packard. That is how we moved from Idaho to Iowa a few years ago. I am including a picture (I hope) from a rainy, snowy T tour in Northern Minnesota a couple of years ago. The float in the carb on the T leaked and I had to go rescue it with the Packard. It is almost dark when the picture was taken. I do belong to PAC and I did drop in at the tour in Des Moines last summer, but I left the Packard home. Thanks, Wayne

I have been lurking on this forum for quite some time now. I don't really feel like I belong here. 17 years ago, I traded for a 1952 300 sedan without an engine and with the transmission in the trunk in pieces. I knew where there was a hearse laying on it's side, so I planned on using it for parts. But someone beat me to the hearse. I looked around for quite sometime for a correct engine and trans and couldn't find one. So at that time I started thinking about a modern engine and transmission. I really get tired of seeing Chevy engines in every car, but when it came down to it, it was the only engine that would fit without cutting things up. So I did the swap. I made motor mounts that sit on the original Packard front mount pads, and bolted a plate to the original trans cross member to adapt the turbo 400 trans mount. I even painted the engine Packard gray. It has a single exhaust exiting in the original location. All the chrome was replated, all stainless removed and polished. New interior and carpet were installed, matching the original as closely as possible. We have worn out two sets of biased ply wide whitewalls, and now have Diamondback radial wide whites, and love them. I always had it in the back of my mind to someday install an original type engine and trans, but I really don't think that will happen. This is our long distance travel car. My wife takes it on 300 mile trips by herself.
I have read comments on the forum about how an engine swap somehow makes my car not a Packard anymore, and other comments of that type. I guess my question is, if I attend a Packard meet somewhere will my car and I be stoned and escorted off the premises, or will we be allowed to enjoy the company of other Packard enthusiasts? Thanks, Wayne

I am getting tired of the air noise and water leaks and need new weatherstripping on my 1952 300. I have looked in the suppliers catalogs for the items I need. I noticed on ebay that someone is selling the items I need for a lot less money than the normal suppliers. Has anyone had any experience with the ebay items? I don't want to install junk, but I wouldn't mind saving a few dollars either. Thanks, Wayne

I installed a set of wide white Diamond Backs on my 1952 300 4 door. The initial price hurt a little, but it was the best money I spent. I had previously worn out two sets of biased ply wide whites. The improvement in handling was amazing. They have been on the car for 8 years and many thousands of miles. They show no wear. The whitewalls are still white. They have not turned brown like Cokers tend to do. If I live long enough to wear them out, they will be replaced with an identical set. I love them.
