Vinnie- There is a guy who advertises for vacuum tanks in the Cormorant. Different item than convertible vacuum actuators but he may have knowledge. Name is David Stewart, Longview, TX (903) 918-3726, dstewart1937@gmail.com. Do you have your top apart? I need measurements for top balance springs that are located in the well above the vacuum actuators. I can't locate the springs at any parts dealer and need to have some made. I need the length, diameter, and the diameter of the spring wire they are made from and tension strength if you can measure. Also what do the end hooks look like and how long is that hook from curve to main body? Can you take a few pictures? I don't even know what they look like. Thanks for any help you can provide I have been looking for these springs for 5 months and am getting desperate. Hugh

Dell - Are you familiar with the convertible top balance springs on a 1940 series 120? I bought a 120 convertible and it is missing the balance springs and I have had no luck in locating replacement springs and I have emailed or called every part dealer I can find. If I had the spring length and wire diameter and the diameter of the spring and possibility the coil tension I could have some made. Does anyone have a suggestion. Thanks much for any help. Hugh

Ken- I recently purchased a Sundowner open carry for my 1940 coupe. I have been completely satisfied with the 20 foot aluminum trailer, its strong, well made and light weight. It's a bumper pull and I have had no issues pulling it with my 1/2 ton Ford. Lots of benefit to a gooseneck closed cargo hauler. Sundowner makes just about anything you might want so I suggest you check out their web site. Good luck.

I would really appreciate any pictures you might have of the top springs and their mounts. Also the vacuum canisters as well. I am having a dustcover made for the top boot this next week and hope to get some information from the upholstery shop.

I recently purchased my 1st Packard,a 1940 convertible coupe. I'm working on learning the car and have identified several issues with the top. It's missing both top counter balance springs and I would like to locate a source for them. Also does anyone out there have any pictures of where they mount and how best to do it, top up or down? Also the actuator rods from the vacuum motors are not attached and I don't know if they work. How do I test the vacuum system? How do I access the vacuum motors to remove them? I have tried to find repair data on the top system and have not been able to locate any information other than the 110/120 Body Manual and the Owners Manual operating instructions. If anyone can help me with my Packard I sure would appreciate it. Thanks, Hugh.

Trailer Tie Down for a 1940 Packard Convertible Coupe
#8

I recently purchased a 1940 Packard series 120, convertible coupe. The carrier I have hired has not come through with pickup and delivery so I have decided to go after the car myself. In anticipation of traveling to shows etc, I have bought a Sundowner aluminum 20 foot trailer to haul my car. While I have lots of utility trailer experience I have never pulled a car hauler or tied down a car so I have no clue and hope someone can help. The trailer is rated for 7000# and weights only 1400#. There are four tie down points rated at 6000# each. I'm concerned about frame or above suspension tie down and what to use. Axle straps? Ratchet straps? Load binders and chains? Or a combination of all? Should I tie front to back, back to front,or directly to the tie down points? This will be a 1,000 mile tow. Is there any problem with putting pressure on the wheel bearings for this length of tow? Thanks to all for any info you can provide.
