Hello again - Had some leakage around the packing nut on the 33 V-12 . Looked like it had been gooped up with plumbers putty or something , and tightened in all the way by someone , nut flange was tight right up against the pump housing. I looked at the 37 and can see that shouldn't be the case as it shows several threads proud 0f the housing. I got a rebuild kit from MM , and was going to pull the whole thing , BUT after reading the links to that work here , I opted for just redoing the packing , ask me why ? lol Anyway , has anyone just replaced the packing alone ? should it be cut to fit in the recess in the back side of the nut or cut to fit inside the hole in the housing ? Just curious and looking for tips before I make the cut and fit . I did some measurements and it looks like there is only a 1/16" clearance between the end of the shaft and the radiator if I was to pull the whole thing out as a unit. Beyond that I could shave a 1/16" off the 2 bottom longer studs that protrude out of the nut when tight also to gain more , but I am sure the whole thing may be solved by just the packing issue. - fingers crossed !
If the bearings are reasonably tight and the shaft is not scored or corroded, repacking will usually fix the problem. The Literature archive on this website has a lot of service information that will be helpful.
