If the bearings are reasonably tight and the shaft is not scored or corroded, repacking will usually fix the problem. The Literature archive on this website has a lot of service information that will be helpful.

I had good luck with just doing the packing so far. Took my time cleaned up everything that I could. First time I cut the packing a little long and then tried shoving it in , it's got to be cut just right or the ends overlap even the tiniest bit causes trouble it seems. Holding well , tiny single drip off the shaft setting overnight , better than a puddle in the drip pan. I opted not to try pulling the pump , if this holds I will be happy.

Cut the ends of the rope at a bit of an angle so they butt up against each other on a bit of an angle. Make sure you use some sort of pick to get all of the old rope out. The modern packing as I remember will not work. There are some sellers that sell the correct packard packing.
