1940 Rear bumper guards

Hi:

While browsing on ebay, I found this "1937 38 39 40 Packard Optional Rear Center Bumper Guard". From what the seller states it seems that it was used as a central bumper guard, meaning one only.

Can anybody tell me more about it? I would like to have it for my 1940 110 convertible, but I believe that using a pair in the regular bumper guard location, instead of the simple regular ones, would look better than having one large one centered between the two regular ones.

Has anybody seen a similar setup or have any pics?

In addition to the center grill guard shown in the photo above which is shown but not described in the 37 accessories, the 38 and 39 acc folders shows a rear lock guard. Is this possibly what they are talking about.

Thanks a lot for the information. Yes, the rear bumper guard is what I was refering to, and it does look similar to the front bumper central guard.

Howard, the pic of the accesory book you post shows a very similar one, only the fixing mechanism to the bumper appears to be different. I am enclosing a pic of the one I have (which of course, up to this point, I am not sure if it is correct for the 1940 models or not).

Question here is, was this option still available for 1940? The 1940 rear bumper has the Packard script and a central bumper guard wouldn't have looked good with that... so was it ever offered?

Thinking of adding two of them, one on each side of the Packard name, instead of the rear bumper guards, would be incorrect?

I don't have any 40 acc info but there is a different dual post front grill protect and rear trunk protect design shown for the 41's. Wonder if Packard's calling the 41 dual "Newly designed" would indicate the single was still used in 40 like the seller of the one on ebay advertised??

Yes, '41 used the dual bumper guards. Your pic shows a Junior series bumper, and the one I am enclosing is senior, from my 180. In either case, the two bumperettes leave the Packard script in the bumper perfectly readable. Using a single bumperette on a '40 or on a '41 would render it unreadable, which I guess wouldn't sound right, and least of all using a Packard original accesory.

I would love to find a '40 brochure to find out. would anybody out there have one that could check on this rear bumper guard option?

In short, what I am really after, is to find out if adding the two rear folding bumper guards was a Packard option for 1940.

Thanks for posting the pics of your car, which by the way, appears to be terrific! I didn't know seniors had bumpers without the Packard script. With Juniors having the Packard script, my question remains open as to using two bumperettes at it's sides instead of one only which wouldn't look nice over the script.

I will have to contact you in the near future for the dash knobs for this car.

Senior cars did not use the Packard script on the bumpers, unless, I think, they did not have a trunk rack. Also, the license plate lens would have been plain. I believe "Packard" on the clear/white lens is from a 1939 model, on a red lens would be from 1938.

Both the single and the dual fold down trunk lid guards were listed as a 1940 accessory. Price for the single that fit the 110 & 120 was $2.95, for the 160 & 180 it was $3.45. The dual fold down was $7.95.
