Heat shield

It appears I will need to make a carb shield since I am missing the one used with the 356 engine. Can get an idea of the overall shape and size from various posted photos collected from unknown places but have not managed to collect any showing the mounting method. Assume it has a tab(s) which will go under a carb mounting nut(s). Any info on the mount detail and approx distance shield is held away from manifold side would be much appreciated. Also the color. In various photos it is pictured as silver, black and green. Which is correct?

Color? All mine are rust colored. Here are some photos. Looks simple to make except maybe for the 'bump-out' that accommodates part of the carburetor.

I wish. I looked earlier and he has pump shields but didn't see the carb shield -- unless he just doesn't show it on his website.

Just make a buck from a scrap of hardwood. Shape one corner of the buck, along its length, to match the intended crown of the shield, and grind or chisel out a cove to match the 'bump-out'.

Then, form the crown in a piece of sheet metal (I like to do so over a scrap of pipe that I've ground/sanded smooth), but BEFORE you trim the edges to size, clamp the metal to the buck and begin working the metal into the cove with the rounded end of a ball-pein hammer.

This 'bump-out' should not be anywhere near as difficult to form as it would be over a sharp crease, but if the sheet metal proves to be sutbborn, a bit of heat from a propane torch might expedite the process.

AFTER the 'bump-out' is formed to your satisfaction, then you can trim the edges to finished size/shape and make and attach the tabs.

Yet, you might wanna try a mock-up with some heavy cardstock paper, first, to make sure the bump-out is properly located and of sufficient depth and breadth.

^^ AKA Hammerforming.

I think on YouTube there are several videos showing various hammerforming technics. But agreed, and a block of hardwood would be perfect for this. A 4x4 with the bump chiseled out of one of the corners, and oversized in length so you clamp the shield in place over the corner after it's been bent 90 degrees would work perfectly.

I bet you could quickly made a small run of 25 of them easily with that one block of wood.

One made out of aluminum may be easier to form, and may dissipate the heat more quickly.
