A year of so ago I read something about the overdrives. I have a 48 custom 8. My question is weather it is a R9 or R11 and if I am remembering it right one is on one side of the transmission and the other on the opposite side. But what is what?

Easy way to tell from under the hood is the relay. R-9 has a large relay, about the size of a voltage regulator, black cover, with 6 leads. R-11 had a much smaller one, cadmium plated cover with intergral fuse, 3(?) leads.

In addition to the relays, answering your question as to visual differences under the car would be the solenoid and lockout lever locations. The R9 has them on the right or passenger side, the R11 on the left.
