Why was the intake manifold so special---or was it?

Reading some old material yesterday which included remarks that that the 56 intake manifold was a great advance for unspecified reasons.

Judging from my car, the advance did not involve improved mileage.... So what was special, and why?

Guess it depends on what they are comparing with. Maybe an advance from previous Packard designs but there were probably competitive designs that were comparable.

Here's some official Packard propaganda to start the discussion.

Are we saying there are differences between the '55 and '56 intake manifolds?

My guess is they found better midrange torque from the longer runner. That improves breakaway and eliminates the "slushamatic" sensation you get with the straight eight.

You have to compare the two cars to appreciate the improvement.

No. Do they differ in any substantive way? I assumed they were interchangeable with the appropriate carb.....
