replacment for 450692 - Ultramatic transmission

Under group 3.57787 is part #450692, the pin to connect the
lever-450372 to 450399-the link to the control manual valve.
This pin either breaks or can be lost.
A satisfactory replacement can be purchased from McMaster-Carr. It is a slotted shoulder screw.
With a nylon patch bonded to the threads, these screws resist loosening due to vibration.
Shoulder length is .250.
Shoulder diameter is 3/16 (.1875)
thread size is 8-32
Part number is 93996A327.
You can supply a #8 washer and an 8-32 nut.
This caused me grief several times in the past and looks like a good replacement.

Randy's suggestion is spot on & should be considered any time you are going to open trans up. The pin could be a breakdown waiting to happen.

My broken pin wasn't causing a problem & was discovered accidentally in the process of opening up the trans for something else. With retaining end broken, it was already partway out of position so would have only been a matter of time before it fell out completely & no gearshift.

Being somewhat uptight, I used what McMaster calls a "thin flex top expanding hex" locknut in addition to the nylon patch instead of a regular nut. Downside to the locknut is they don't come individually like the bolt does.

My personal suggestion is to simply use a tiny clevis pin secured by a tiny cotter pin. McMaster has both: 98306A100 and 98401A409. But your local hardware store probably has them too without having to buy a whole pile.

I asked Ross also, he likes to tap a 10-24 hole thru the hole in the selector shaft arm then just run a screw through with a nylock nut. Obviously the nut should not be completely tightened. This gives the mechanism very little play, which makes this a fast and good solution. Except: on Push Button transmissions, the motor relies on this play to not nudge the manual valve out from its detents, so this can't be done on transmissions using those.
