I am seeking advice - comments - anything really which is relevant to possible purchase of a 1948 Packard 22nd Series 6 cylinder Touring Sedan (some references to these cars say the majority were Taxis ?)

Some references also refer to it as an "Export
Model" ?

The car was manufactured in right hand drive form and exported to South Africa and was rebuilt (owner's desription) in 1970 including an engine rebuild in 1978 and a repaint and rechrome in 1980 and in 1981 it was brought to the UK

The car engine runs but the body work has a lot of surface rust due to living under a tarpaulin for some time also the brakes are not working at all

No photos at this stage but if I get any feedback and I purchase her then they'll be posted

Any feedback welcomed

Added just before logging off - fabulous site - fabulous picture - I'll be back !!

I think you have done your homework well. 99% sure it was one of the 6 cylinder export cars. Also with RHD, it is perfect for your country without modification. Good luck and welcome to the site.

There was some discussion a while back about when Packard made their last 6 cylinder model.

Supposedly the last catalog 6 cylinder was the 1947 model. But they continued building them to special order for export and taxicabs after that.

They continued building the 6 cylinder engine up to 1952 or so as a marine or industrial engine.

A 22nd series 1948 should bear the chassis or model # 2240 and the body #2282 (export touring sedan) or 2286 (export taxicab).

G'day meaarch,
to Packardinfo and wish you well in your proposed purchase. If you do purchase, please include the '48 in the Owner Registry here. Good luck.

That's a fairly rare car. Packard only built 3951 6 cylinder cars for 1948. That included all of the taxis and exports. I should be able to reduce the number more when I can get to my research data.
Either way, I'm sure you will enjoy it if you get it.
Welcome.

If that's the car I think it is (turquoise blue?), it's a 2282. Although the car configuration is rare for 1948, I don't think that getting parts would be much of a problem. Other than the RHD conversion bits I think most parts are available from the usual US vendors. I'm assuming that the six cylinder engine is basically the same one used in the Clippers.

The 22nd/23rd series Packards are well built cars and I would imagine pretty rare in England. Not easily mistaken for a Ford Anglia. Good luck.

They were used in White trucks if I remember right.
