Ultramatic Approx Size For Crating

I have several pre-1955 Ultramatics in my shop which take up floor space so I am thinking of ordering some crates before I get to my shop in a couple weeks so that they can be stacked for easier storage. Does anyone have some approximate dimensions front to back including the inlet shaft, width and height?

I can measure when I get back home. For now this is what I have. Also be sure that the crates can hold about 250#...

This may be overkill, but a standard pallet has a diagonal a little over 5’ and no problem with the weight. Used pallets are generally available pretty cheap

Thank you for the replies! I have no room for large pallets and I can’t stack transmissions that way. It would defeat the purpose of freeing up floor space.

If I were Out West, I'd measure mine for you. It's a 1951 (I think). Fred can't read a tape and has Opposable Thumbs Deficit Disorder.

If you're not having fun, maybe it's your own damned fault.

Wat, thanks for thinking of it but did Fred actually try? Maybe she could just pace it off.

Dads 56, I don’t know enough about the Twin Ultramatics to know if they have a longer tail shaft or not but it might be a place to start. All I need is a rough estimate (without the dipstick if Gearstart or Twin Ultramatic)

Thank you!

It looks like the closest palleted crate I can get is 36” x 22” x 22" which is a bit too short although possibly for storage the shaft could stick out. When I transported a 1951 engine with attached transmission, the longest crate was also too short so I had to cut a hole for the tail shaft to stick out slightly.

Haven't bought any crates in a long time, usually fairly costly, if custom size and strong enough to stack many high. I had a '50s fender shipped recently and the guy made one and upped the shipping cost quite a bit.
One option also, not cheap,~$200 ea, are transmission storage cases. Made out of plastic, leak proof, specifically for transmission storage. Will last longer than a crate. Easy search.
Most trans shops, just use a rack. Heavy self assemble storage shelves are fairly inexpensive at the Chinese takeouts. What I use for misc parts. Doesn't pay to skimp here. Another cheap way is industrial shelving is frequently found at auction. Industrial grade for pennies/dollars.
