New 54 steering wheel / J-2557 wheel puller

I was looking to replace my 54 Pacific steering wheel with a custom purple transparent wheel from Dennis Crooks @ Quality Restorationsqualityrestorations.com/ . With the lack of a J-2557 wheel puller on hand, Harbor Freight and Studebakerparts.com do have wheel pullers. Will any of these suffice? What would be the exact procedure to replace my wheel? QR deals in wheel exchange and I am reluctant to actually give up my current wheel. Is there availability of any senior 54 Packard steering wheels out there for sale I can use for an exchange? Thoughts and advice are welcome.

Any standard steering wheel puller will work and they are so inexpensive that I can’t imagine anyone wanting to take the time and effort to make one. Of course, for me, the same one will work on all my cars whether Packard or not so the need amortizes the cost.

Like Don said, any puller will work. Just rent one from an auto parts store....it has everything you need in it.

I recorded it the last time I pulled my wheel off, maybe this will help:

Regarding exchanging the wheel, all wheels were the same for '51-54 and perhaps a bit earlier. The center cap would differ some depending on the model, but that's not part of what you would be sending in. You would be sending in just the wheel itself with no chrome attached. These wheels are everywhere, so it should be very easy to find one.

Amethyst front, rear and roof emblems used to be available too from Emblem Magic but unfortunately they folded taking some of my parts with them.

I have a piece of angle iron with two slotted holes drilled in it. That and a couple of bolts makes a stout universal steering wheel puller.

Hi KP, quick question, my 54 steering wheel is part #465223 (white). I have come across a 53 steering wheel part #426320 (black) with no chrome. Should this suffice?

I'm not the expert on it, but my understanding is the wheels were essentially all the same. They are just hard rubber over a metal frame. The chrome pieces may be different, but they just pop out of the rubber (metal retainer clips may come with it) and can be put on a different wheel. I'm pretty sure the mounting is all the same as is the geometry of the wheel itself.

Anyone able to confirm or correct this?
