" I'm not sure how many know this but nearly all of the inline blocks are CAST STEEL, not the typical CAST IRON"

THis begs many questions:

IS the cast STEEL bore more accomodating of CHROME rings at least one at the TOP ring????

Does the cast steel bore necessarily last longer before rebore is needed????

That's just two ideas to start with. The first question has to do with jogging my memmory of many years ago before Packard was ever even an issue with me.

Lets see where this thread goes.

There were certain Packard blocks that had a lot of chrome in them and could NOT run chrome rings. A local fellow wore out a set of Perfect Circle (fairly sure about the brand) chrome rings in not many miles. When he had rings mic'd they discovered extreme wear. A rep from Perfect Circle came out and examined the block, looked up the motor and serial number and stated that the block had to run cast-iron rings. They were installed and car ran well until he scattered the crank all over the highway. This was in the late fifties.
