Could well have been the rear of a '67 Packard, applique and all. The '65 Ambassador also had cathedrals, not squared off like the '67 but instead rounded on top and very narrow.

No doubt Dick Teague revisited Packard themes in his subsequent work at American Motors. The 1969 Ambassador frontal styling, carried through to 1973, has a broad interpretation of the hallmark Packard radiator/grille, albeit without the inside cusps. Its among the most attractive Ambassador styling.

Although a coincidence, the '69 Ambassador wheelbase was lengthened to 122 inches, the additional length all in the axle-to-dash area. Like Packard, AMC shared a common body shell across their Classic/Rebel/Ambassador series, differentiating by styling cues and wheelbase length in the front fenders/hood.

Absolutely, Steve. Front didn't need much to minimally Packardize it... rounded corners, removal of horizontal bar, Circle V perhaps gold anodized along with eggcrate grill.

Normally I advocate long axle-dash but in this case Teague might have thrown the car out of proportion given carryover rear overhang. Perhaps 120 instead of 122 inches was optimum wheelbase. With advanced tech like independent rear suspension, disc brakes, radial tires and maybe fuel injection might have been worthy competitor to Mercedes. Top tier interior for sure.
