Auto historian Alden Jewell provided us with a video of a self-parking pre-war Packard. The inventor lived in Piedmont, CA in the hills above Oakland. He tried again after World War II with the device installed in an early '50s Cadillac and in a '53 Packard Cavalier. The Packard was seen on NBC's Today show.

It must have been one mighty expensive installation. And it's not a 1934 Packard, at quick glance looks to be a 6th Series (1929).

My mistake on the year! I got an e-mail from another reader who identified the car as a '30. Be that as it may, I (ahem) SHOULD have realized that the car isn't a '34.

By the insert roof and the visor above the windshield I would say its a Seventh Series or 1930 model, probably a 726 five passenger sedan.

I once saw the 1953 Cavaliet at a meet at Stanford University where it had a for sale sign in the window. I'm not sure if it sold or to whom.

There was a postwar Packard with this device installed at the Frick estate in Pgh. Frick is a four-letter word in Pgh though and I've never been there. After searching their website there is no mention of this auto.

I think the '53 Cavalier mentioned above is seen in this video. I think this is the same car that was shown on the Today Show.
