That which APPEARS to be a crack needs to be filed smooth. THe sharp angle can cause breakage.

IIRC the sleeve is only neded for INstallation, NOT removal. I used a piece of PVC or maybe it's water pipe as a sleeve.

I would think you can put an arc weld bead in corner.
