Fascinating and a bit frightening.
So far (keeping fingers firmly crossed!) no events involving chips or cracks....just a lack of paint. In view of the material the wheel seems to be made of, will clear hold and function? Figure to give it a good cleaning, then dry and spray a couple of coats.....

I think the application of a clear coat to the wheel will arrest the smudging your slacks are subjected to each time you drive. I think clearing it in the car will be cumbersome. Removing the wheel, though a bit of a PITA, will allow you to really do it right! Just take your time.
