My 54 Cavalier has about 91K and I know that is accurate because the car came with all the service receipts from the day it was bought new to now.

As I have pictures of the restoration, I know they had the motor apart with the pistons out, but I don't know exactly what machine work was done (rings guides etc). I believe crank bearings were all replaced and hopefully the crank seals.

My oil leaks are kittle drip spots that come from somewhere other than where the drip get to the front frame member, and I don't believe they account for much oil consumption.

The steering box likes to drip as well.

The former owner ran synthetic oil (and didn't believe in changing it), I run SAE-30 but I was thinking of changing to 10-40.

To diagnose the problem without a tear down, I would follow the vehicle up a steep hill at high throttle and down hill with the throttle closed.

If it smokes up the hill it rings, if it smokes down the hill it's guides.

There is also the potential of a leak in the vacuum pump and that line can be plugged to determine if that is the source.

The guides can be tested to an extent with the valve covers off.

Tim make a good suggestion and an easy one check. You may be able to see oil in a vacuum line to see if that part of the pump is leaking, or as Tim suggests, plug the line.
